Safe Codes for The Last of Us Part 1: How to Open All Safes
Locked safes are one of the few enhancements in The Last of Us: Part 1 that were not present in the original project. In this guide, we'll detail how to unlock all the safes in the game and what valuable items you can find inside.
How to Unlock Safes
The principle of using safes is quite simple: players need to find a specific code somewhere on the level and use it to open the locked vault. Most of them are hidden around crates, but will require the player's attentiveness during a thorough search.
Searching for safe codes is optional, so gamers don't need to worry about unlocking every storage, but inside are useful items that can significantly simplify survival. Also, finding all the codes unlocks the achievement Nimble Fingers, which users can achieve after inspecting each safe. The sections below list all the codes for the locked vaults.
How to Open the Safe in the Outskirts (Downtown)
The very first safe can be found a few hours into the game. Make your way to the destroyed subway in the downtown area and avoid encountering zombies. Immediately go to the left side of the location and find the store. Jump over the counter and open the box behind the cash register. Inside it, there is a note with the combination for the safe — 03-43-78.
Exit through the central door and continue further until you find a bookstore.
Inspect the large safe behind another counter inside the room. Enter the code and receive 50 parts.
How to Open the Safe in Bill's Town (Woods)
In the first part of the level, Joel will carry Ellie over a chain-link fence and ask her to open a door. The player will find themselves on a street with many buildings that can be explored. Reach this area and follow the path to the right. Along the way, you'll notice a large metal safe on the street next to a pickup truck.
At the very end of the street, we'll find a note with the safe code attached to the barbed wire — 05-17-21.
We head back to the safe and open it. Inside, we discover 50 parts, 5 supplements, and shells for the hunting shotgun.
How to Open the Safe in Pittsburgh (Hotel Lobby)
In the hotel, Joel needs to place a ladder found on the left side of the lobby to continue. We position the ladder in the necessary spot and climb up. Immediately, we move to the right and navigate through a broken passage along the wall. We inspect an open suitcase. Inside, we find a note with the code for the safe — 22-10-56.
We jump back down to the lower floor and find another room on the right side of the room behind the reception desk.
Inside the room, we inspect the safe and enter the correct combination. We take a manual, 50 parts, revolver ammunition, and other materials for crafting items.
How to Open the Safe in the Suburbs (house)
After escaping the sewers, Joel and Ellie will find themselves in a small house. Do not go out onto the large, wide street, otherwise, upon encountering the sniper, returning to the safe will be impossible, and you will have to reload the entire chapter. Explore the last house in this area and pass by the blue ice cream truck into a dead-end zone.
We find the safe code in the house on the attic — 08-21-36. To do this, we'll need to inspect a matchbox.
We go down one floor and open the safe located in the bedroom closet. Inside, we'll find 10 supplements, 50 parts, and shotgun shells.
