Types of Ghosts in Phasmophobia: How to Determine the Type of Ghost?
Each type of ghost in Phasmophobia has its strengths and weaknesses. In this guide, we will tell you how to identify and neutralize the ghosts that you encounter in the game.
Spirit
The most common type of ghost. You can encounter them in hunting grounds. You can identify a spirit using a Spirit Box, Fingerprints, and Ghost Writing. You can neutralize it using Smudge Sticks.
Wraith
This type of ghost can fly and move through walls, making it impossible to identify by footsteps. You can identify a wraith using Fingerprints, a Spirit Box, and Freezing Temperatures. The best way to deal with them is to use Salt. They will never step on it.
Phantom
Phantoms, like spirits, are often found in hunting grounds. Keep in mind that even looking at this ghost will cause sanity to drop. However, if you manage to take a photo of the phantom, it will disappear for a while. It can be identified by a Ghost Orb, EMF Level 5, and Freezing Temperatures.
Poltergeist
This type of ghost lifts objects and throws them at the player. However, it cannot harm you in empty rooms. You can identify a poltergeist using a Spirit Box, Fingerprints, and a Ghost Orb.
Banshee
Banshees are hunters that will chase a victim until they kill them. However, a banshee can only target one player at a time. Banshees are afraid of Crucifixes and are less aggressive if they see one in your hands. You can identify this ghost using a Spirit Box, Fingerprints, and Ghost Writing.
Jinn
Jinns protect their territory. They will chase you at high speed if they think you pose a threat. However, if you turn off the power source in the location, the ghost will lose its ability. You can identify a jinn using a Spirit Box, a Ghost Orb, and EMF Level 5.
Revenant
Revenants move quickly only when they see a victim. If they lose sight of you, they will move slowly, and you can escape. You can identify a revenant using Fingerprints, EMF Level 5, and Ghost Writing.
Shade
Shades are extremely difficult to detect. Moreover, they will stop any activity if there are several people nearby. To identify a shade, use EMF Level 5, Ghost Writing, and a Ghost Orb.
Demon
The most aggressive type of ghost — it attacks players without any reason. Note that talking to a demon through a Ouija Board does not harm the players' sanity. It can be identified using a Spirit Box, Freezing Temperatures, and Ghost Writing.
Yurei
Yurei has the strongest effect on people's sanity. However, if you smudge its room, it will stop wandering around the location for a while. Yurei can be identified using a Ghost Orb, Ghost Writing, and Freezing Temperatures. Note that the ghost cannot use its abilities if there is no door in the room.
Oni
Oni is the complete opposite of Shade. It becomes more active when people are around. This makes it easier to detect. You can use EMF Level 5, a Spirit Box, and Ghost Writing to identify it.
Mare
Mare does not leave its habitat, and its aggression directly depends on whether the lights are on or off. If the location is dark, Mare is highly likely to attack you. This ghost can also attack with the lights on, but for this, your character's sanity must be at 40%, whereas with the lights off, it's 60%. Mare can turn off the lights using the switch and the fuse box.
Revenant
An aggressive ghost that moves much faster than other ghosts in the game. It is especially dangerous in straight corridors. If Revenant goes into hunting mode, try to turn a corner, close a door behind you, or hide. Once it loses sight of you, its speed will drop sharply, giving your character a chance to escape or hide. You can avoid detection using lit smudge sticks.
Note that the ghost always runs to the place where it last saw you. If it does not find you, its movement speed will gradually decrease.
Yokai
This ghost reacts to players' voices. If it gets too noisy around it, it will start hunting you even at 80% sanity. However, in its aggressive phase, it hears much worse than other ghosts. If you suspect there is a Yokai in the location, try to remain silent or speak as quietly as possible.
Hantu
The speed of this ghost directly depends on the ambient temperature. The colder it is, the faster it moves, and vice versa. Hantu periodically turns off the fuse box to lower the temperature as much as possible. During a hunt, you can see your breath in the ghost's habitat. To combat it, use smudge sticks and remember to turn on the fuse box to prevent the location from getting too cold.
Goryo
This invisible ghost can only be detected through a laser projector using a video camera. It is impossible to see it with the naked eye. Moreover, it hardly moves around the location and stays close to the place of its death.
Myling
You can detect Myling before the hunt starts using a parabolic microphone. This way, you can hear paranormal sounds that occur more frequently than with other ghosts. However, during the hunt, Myling behaves quietly.
Onryo
The actions of this ghost depend on fire. If the fire goes out or Onryo extinguishes it, the ghost begins a hunt, regardless of the player's sanity. However, if you light a fire or use a fire source such as a lighter or a lit candle, the ghost immediately stops the pursuit. Onryo extinguishes flames more often than other ghosts.
The Twins
A pair of ghosts, one of which stays in its habitat, while the other roams around the location. The first is considered the main one, responds to radio signals, and can lower the temperature. The second does not do this, but it cannot be detected using motion sensors. If a hunt starts, there is a 50% chance that the main twin or the one who found you will chase you. Only one ghost can be in the aggressive phase at a time. If you use a crucifix, it will affect the main twin regardless of how far away it is.
Raiju
The activity of this ghost depends on electronic devices. If one of them is working nearby, the sanity threshold required for the hunt will increase to 65%. Raiju can pass through electronic items (wristwatches, cameras, motion and temperature sensors), after which its movement speed increases. It creates interference on devices, making it easy to track and then escape or hide. Raiju's influence radius reaches 15 meters.
Obake
This ghost can be identified by its six-fingered fingerprints. The number of fingers can change depending on its current form, making it harder to detect Obake. Also, remember about mimics that impersonate other ghosts, including this one. If flickering starts, Obake has a 5.66% chance to change form and turn into another ghost. This will happen at least once during the hunt.
The Mimic
This ghost exactly copies other ghosts, not only in appearance but also in hunting methods. During the game, it can change the object it mimics. The Mimic can be identified by a combination of four clues: freezing temperatures, spirit box, fingerprints, and ghost orb.
Moroi
This ghost can curse players, causing their sanity to decrease much faster than usual. This happens through the use of the spirit box, and Moroi can curse multiple people at once. Its movement speed directly depends on the player's sanity — the lower it is, the faster the ghost moves. The only way to lift the curse is to take a sanity pill. If you leave the investigation area, your sanity will not recover, but the scale will stop decreasing. Note that smudge sticks, which can be used during a hunt, stop Moroi for 12 seconds. Other ghosts are stopped for only 6 seconds.
Deogen
This ghost always sees players, regardless of the distance and obstacles between them. It is impossible to hide from it, only to run away. As it gets closer to your character, the ghost's movement speed decreases. You can identify it using the spirit box — heavy breathing is only found with Deogen.
Thaye
At the very beginning of the game session, Thaye is extremely active, particularly causing paranormal events and throwing various items. Moreover, it moves quickly. However, over time, the ghost begins to behave more calmly, and its movement speed decreases. Therefore, the most important thing in dealing with it is to survive the early stage of the hunt. It is advisable to have smudge sticks and know places where you can hide.
