Superman Director Discusses the Most Controversial Part of the Costume: The Red Trunks

In the lead-up to the release of the first Superman trailer, James Gunn gave interviews to several outlets, shedding light on the upcoming superhero film. Among the details discussed was the return of Superman’s iconic red trunks worn over his suit.

Key Details About the Film:

  • The movie won’t be another origin story. Superman is already known in Metropolis and has a working relationship with Lois Lane, though he hasn’t yet encountered Lex Luthor;
  • The story takes place over a short time span, beginning with an action-packed sequence;
  • Some action scenes were filmed using drones, with Gunn drawing inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick;
  • Fans shouldn’t expect the tone of Guardians of the Galaxy. There will be humor, but it won’t dominate the film;
  • Mister Terrific will play a significant role in the plot;
  • Events in Superman will have a direct impact on Peacemaker’s second season.

Initially, James Gunn was against including the red trunks, but lead actor David Corenswet insisted on keeping the element in the design.

We were trying on all these different versions, and we screened tested with trunks and no trunks. And one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes… He’s this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary, individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope that shows that positivity. And that really clicked in for me. And I think trying to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have some frivolity to it at its base, trying to make it look serious, is silly because he is a superhero. He’s the first one, brightly colored and that’s who he is.

The debut trailer for Superman is set to drop in a few hours, with the film scheduled to premiere on July 11.
