The team from the technical channel Digital Foundry released a fresh digest where they discussed the latest news and answered several questions from viewers. In particular, the experts explained why PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, despite their different power levels, perform at roughly the same level.

On paper, the Xbox Series X is considered the most powerful console on the market — its power is 12 teraflops. The PlayStation 5 has a power rating of 10.23 teraflops, but the device performs just as well, and sometimes even better than its competitor. Digital Foundry found the answer by interviewing several AAA game developers.

  • The PlayStation 5 has a much more efficient GPU compiler and access to a lower-level API. This allows for better management of the console's power;
  • The PlayStation 5's GPU has fewer compute units, but its clock speed is higher. This allows certain tasks to be completed faster.

Digital Foundry noted that the Xbox Series X also has its advantages. The console works better with DirectX 12, DXR ray tracing, and VRR, and its computational bandwidth is higher.

At the end of this year, Sony is expected to release the PlayStation 5 Pro — a more powerful version of the console with improved ray tracing and its own image scaling technology.
