For decades, fans of Home Alone have wondered how Kevin McCallister's parents could afford their lavish lifestyle: a luxurious house, trips to Paris, and Burberry clothes. In a recent interview, director Chris Columbus finally shed some light on the mystery, revealing what Kevin’s mom and dad did for a living.
According to Columbus, the professions were discussed even before filming began. It turns out that Kate McCallister is a highly successful fashion designer, as hinted at by the mannequins in the basement. As for Peter McCallister, the director admitted he can’t recall his exact occupation but was certain the family wasn’t involved in anything shady.
The father could have, based on John Hughes own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did. Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago.
