Mark Zuckerberg Talks Government Censorship on Meta Platforms

In a recent controversial Joe Rogan podcast, Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg revealed some interesting details about content moderation on his platforms. According to the entrepreneur, the US government has effectively introduced censorship.
As Mark Zuckerberg explained during his speech, the initial plan was to simply set up a fact-checking system. However, since 2016, after the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump, the Democratic Party has decided to seriously take up the cleanup of platforms:
- Due to suspicions of a disinformation campaign, Facebook had to introduce strict moderation of political content.
- At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, censorship reached a real peak: it was forbidden to talk about the harm of vaccines and even use memes on this topic. For example, the authorities personally contacted the administration to remove a meme with Leonardo DiCaprio's doubting hero from Inception.
- The initial refusal to follow these measures led to Meta being effectively accused of causing deaths due to «spreading misinformation».
- US intelligence agencies can actually read WhatsApp users' correspondence. The company itself does not see their content unless it has been photographed or transmitted in some other way. In addition, the Signal messenger can also be hacked due to its open source code.
- The media mogul also commented on the arrest of Telegram owner Pavel Durov in France, which took place in the summer of 2024. Mark Zuckerberg said that he was concerned about this fact — the precedent could lead to governments physically putting pressure on companies.
Now he intends to put an end to censorship on his platforms. In his recent statement, the entrepreneur said that he intends to abandon strict moderation and introduce a system of notes from users, similar to X (Twitter).
