HDMI 2.2 Standard Announced — Bandwidth Doubles

During CES 2025, HDMI 2.2 was unveiled — the latest version of the multimedia interface specification. Its bandwidth has doubled compared to the previous version, reaching up to 96 Gbps (compared to 48 Gbps in HDMI 2.1).

Key features include:

Support for 12K resolution (12288x6480 pixels or 80 MP) at up to 120 FPS;
New Ultra 96 HDMI branded cables supporting 4K resolution at up to 480 FPS. Cable lengths start at two meters, with sales beginning in Q3-Q4 of this year;
Next-generation Fixed Rate Link Signaling technology for better support of uncompressed content in resolutions starting from 4K at 60 FPS and above;
A new Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve audio and data synchronization.

It's reported that HDMI 2.2 can transmit uncompressed video at 4K and 240 FPS or 8K and 60 FPS with full color formats in both 10-bit and 12-bit. Video at higher resolutions will undergo a specific form of compression to fit within the 96 Gbps bandwidth. For comparison, the maximum bandwidth of DisplayPort 2.1b is 80 Gbps.
