MD's Next-Generation Processors to Feature a Major Boost in Cores and Cache

AMD is actively developing a new line of processors based on the Zen 6 architecture, internally referred to as Medusa Ridge. According to well-known insiders, the upcoming chips are expected to deliver a significant increase in core count and cache size, potentially revolutionizing both desktop and server solutions.

Among the rumored configurations are models with 12, 24, and 32 physical cores. Notably, different models will feature distinct core types: the 12- and 24-core processors are said to be built on high-performance Zen 6 cores, while the 32-core variant is expected to use energy-efficient Zen 6c cores. Leaks suggest that the base models without 3D V-Cache technology will have the following L3 cache sizes:

  • Single Zen 6 CCD: around 48 MB of L3 cache;
  • Dual Zen 6 CCD: a total of 96 MB of L3 cache;
  • Single Zen 6c CCD: approximately 64 MB of L3 cache;
  • Dual Zen 6c CCD: up to 128 MB of L3 cache.

These figures reflect a substantial increase in cache capacity compared to previous generations, which should enhance performance in gaming and data processing tasks. Reports also point to a future Ryzen X series featuring up to 24 cores and up to 160 MB of L3 cache in the base configuration. Additionally, AMD is rumored to be working on a new 2.5D integration technology that could improve chip component connectivity, enhancing data bandwidth. This would be particularly beneficial for multi-CCD models, where synergy between cache and compute units is critical for maximizing efficiency.

The new processors will maintain compatibility with the AM5 socket, which is good news for users who have already invested in the latest motherboards. AMD also plans to introduce similar architectural advancements in the mobile segment, with new products under the Ryzen AI 400 Medusa Point and Ryzen AI Max+ 400 Medusa Halo brands. These mobile chips are expected to compete with the current market leaders.

It’s important to note that much of this information remains speculative. However, if these innovations come to fruition, AMD’s new processor lineup could become a formidable competitor in the global computing market, setting new benchmarks for performance and energy efficiency.
