Castlevania is a very old and famous series of platformers and later slashers, the first parts of which were released on the NES. It tells about the eternal confrontation between the powerful Count Dracula and the Belmont family of vampire hunters. Although Dracula is usually defeated, he is reborn, either by himself or with the help of his eternal servants.
The first games in the Castlevania series are Metroidvania platformers: the main character is given freedom of movement, but most locations cannot be entered from the very beginning without certain artifacts. When there are more of these artifacts, previously closed doors open.
The Lords of Shadow series, in turn, is a 3D slasher without Metroidvania elements.
