Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective — the player reads a brief introduction to the case, then decides where to look for clues and consults a booklet that tells what clues can be found in that location. When a player thinks they know the details of a case, they go to the quiz book and answer questions about the case. Players earn points by answering questions correctly, but lose points for each location previously visited.
The game consists of booklets, maps, a reproduction of The Times filled with hints, and a small directory that tells the player which area of London to visit to talk to the character. In the absence of a board, it is a hybrid of a traditional game book and a regular board game.
