The recent PS5 Pro has raised many questions among gamers. Some are curious to know if Sony's new console can run GTA 6 in 4K and 60 FPS. Digital Foundry's technical editor Richard Leadbetter shared his opinion on this matter.

He believes that footage from last year's GTA 6 trailer was captured on a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. This suggests that the base consoles are fully capable of reproducing the graphical level of detail shown in the trailer. Thus, the performance of the PS5 Pro will be more than sufficient for stable GTA 6 gameplay.

However, things get much more complicated when it comes to frame rate, specifically 60 FPS.

No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!). The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps,» he explains. «This isn't a GPU problem, it's a CPU problem.

He believes that the PS5 Pro version of GTA 6 will have improved visuals and a more stable frame rate, but it will remain at 30 FPS.

«Of course, all bets are off if Rockstar is targeting 60fps on the standard PS5 — but we've seen no evidence so far to suggest it is», — added the technical expert.

In his interview, he also shared his overall thoughts on the idea of releasing the PS5 Pro. The presentation didn't impress him much, as Sony didn't have enough time to showcase all the technical features of the new console in nine minutes. However, the presented Game Boost technology (which can increase FPS in 8.5 thousand games) intrigued him.

Regarding the cost of the PS5 Pro ($700 in the USA and €800 in Europe), Richard Leadbetter believes it is too high. Moreover, for that price, the user won't even get a built-in drive — it will have to be purchased separately. However, according to the Digital Foundry technical editor, it's unlikely that a $700 gaming PC can be built to run games at the same quality as the PS5 Pro.

Richard Leadbetter speculates that Xbox head Phil Spencer watched Sony's presentation but probably doesn't plan to follow the company's example by releasing an upgraded console version. He explained it as follows: «Xbox players already have a great way to play high-end Xbox games — and that's on PC, where the enthusiast has more freedom to pick and choose the kind of hardware they want».

More details about the PS5 Pro and all its features can be found here. Some analysts predict that despite the relatively high price, Sony will manage to sell 13 million consoles by 2029.

As for GTA 6, the game's release is scheduled for 2025. Recently, there was a rumor about a possible delay in the release date, but popular journalist and insider Jason Schreier has already debunked it.
