Gamers Concerned: Microsoft Aims to Revive Old Games with AI

Microsoft has announced its consideration of artificial intelligence as a means to preserve old games, thereby giving them a second life and extending their relevance. However, not all gamers see this as a good idea.
In an official blog post, Fatima Kardar, Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI at Microsoft, shared her vision of using the generative AI model Muse to preserve video games.
Today, countless classic games tied to aging hardware are no longer playable by most people. Thanks to this breakthrough, we are exploring the potential for Muse to take older back catalog games from our studios and optimize them for any device. We believe this could radically change how we preserve and experience classic games in the future and make them accessible to more players.
This statement has sparked mixed reactions online. Some gamers fear that using AI could degrade classic games, ruining their design elements. Others argue that many old games have licensing issues that AI cannot solve.
"A classic game recreated with AI is no longer a classic game," said Mike Leiderman.
"Great idea MS, just take beloved classics and run them through the Slopmatic9000. I’d love to play versions of my faves that look like Fortnite and retain none of the intelligent design of the original creators," — Jay-RPG.
"Here’s an idea, maybe they could’ve taken the hundreds of developers they’ve fired in the past few years and have them work on porting older games to newer systems. Seems more resourceful and ethical than firing them and using ai," — LostUser64.
"Wouldn't it be easier to just... use an emulator? Besides, the biggest reason old games fade into obscurity is for legal reasons, not because emulators can't run them," — BlueAizu.
"While this AI thing is all very stupid, Xbox is actually pretty good about making its back catalog of games available, arguably much better than Nintendo and Sony in that regard," — Marc Deschamps.
It's worth noting that using AI to transform old games is not a new idea. For example, modders often resort to this method to enhance texture resolution.
