Walkthrough SchoolBoy Runaway: All Puzzles and Endings

SchoolBoy Runaway is a new game from Linked Squad, the developer of Metel Horror Escape and other projects in a similar genre. At the moment, we have access to three acts, each of which allows gamers to unlock multiple endings. In this guide, we will describe the solution to all the puzzles and the walkthrough of each act, as well as tell you how to get all the available endings.

SchoolBoy Runaway was released exclusively on the iOS and Android mobile platforms, but the developer will likely port the game to PC for the Steam platform soon, as it was with previous projects.

Note: Currently, only the first act of the game is available. You can also help expand the guide. To do this, write your tips in the comments.

Act 1 — Escape

In the first act, the main character finds himself locked in a house with his parents. Players need to find a way out and not get caught by the parents. Below we have described useful tips for the walkthrough.

Tips:

  • To avoid attracting the parents' attention, try to move while crouching. Use the special button in the bottom right corner of the screen for this;
  • If the parents hear a noise or discover you, run to your room and sit on the couch. In the latter case, the main character is likely to be punished anyway;
  • Return all items to their places, close or open doors and cabinets. Everything should remain in the same position as it was before you arrived. Otherwise, the protagonist will be punished;
  • Players have two mistakes available. For each mistake, you will have to pay with time and perform a simple task: sweep the yard, mop the floor (if your mother found you), or do physical exercises (if your father caught you). If you get caught a third time, the game will end, and you will get the first ending;
  • If the mother discovers your disappearance, she will turn to the father for help;
  • Note that items can change their location, but they are almost always in the same places. What does this mean? For example, you found a charger in a certain place, and in the next playthrough, there will be a battery or another item instead. Remember such places;
  • After scripted actions, parents often go to the main character's room to check on him. For example, the father may enter there after visiting the restroom.

Ending #1

This ending assumes that you got caught by one of the parents at least three times. In the finale, you will see the father beating the boy with a belt in his room.

  • Damn! How did I mess up so badly? I should have been more vigilant and cunning. With these skills, all I can do is get a belt to my backside.

Ending #2

After the introductory video, inspect the item spawn locations in the hallway (pull-out drawers) and in the bathroom. Take the Laundry Detergent on the machine, throw the Dirty Rag inside (it's in a bucket behind the curtain), and turn it on to get a Clean Rag. Turn off the light first, and when the machine washes the rag, open the door, take the item, and hide behind the curtain.

Mom will come to check the noise from the bathroom, and you just need to avoid getting caught. Head to the parents' bedroom. On the dressing table, take the Hairpin and use it to open the drawer in the same table. There might be a random item inside, such as a Battery or a Light Bulb. If you find nothing, inspect other pull-out drawers in the nightstands.

To open the safe in the bedroom, use one of the following combinations (left to right). Orient yourself by the color of the central square.

First combination

  • Top row: White, Blue, Yellow;
  • Middle row: Red, Red, Red;
  • Bottom row: Orange, Yellow, White.

Second combination

  • Top row: Orange, White, Blue;
  • Middle row: Yellow, Green, White;
  • Bottom row: Green, Yellow, Yellow.

Third combination

  • Top row: Red, White, Yellow;
  • Middle row: Red, Orange, Green;
  • Bottom row: Orange, Yellow, Red.

Fourth combination

  • Top row: Green, Green, Orange;
  • Middle row: White, Blue, Blue;
  • Bottom row: Yellow, Green, Blue.

Fifth combination

  • Top row: White, Blue, Green;
  • Middle row: Orange, White, Orange;
  • Bottom row: Red, Orange, Green.

Sixth combination

  • Top row: White, Orange, Red;
  • Middle row: Red, Yellow, Blue;
  • Bottom row: Blue, Green, Blue.

Note: The combination may change! Orient yourself by the Rubik's Cube in the main character's room!

In the safe, there can be any item, but it's better if it's the Car Keys. If you didn't find them here, you can try to pick them up through a bug in the pantry. First, you will need to find a Light Bulb, turn on the light, and aim at the area between the wall cabinet and the shelf.

Now inspect the vase. Turn the item over to make a key and a flower fall out of it. First, put the flower in the vase, then pick up the Key and hide in the closet, as the noise will attract the father's attention.

Now, if you lack key items, you'll have to lure the mother out of the kitchen. From time to time, she goes to water the flowers, but it's best to use the doorbell — this way, you'll have more time to inspect the kitchen.

First, you need to make the mother open the window. To do this, interact with the lids on the pot and pan, turn off the hood for a while, and inspect the cabinets and the freezer. The latter will definitely contain Frozen Meat. It needs to be thawed in the microwave, but it won't be needed for this ending.

Before the mother returns, everything needs to be put back in place, including closing the lids and turning on the hood. Very often, you can find Nails in the large cabinet opposite the stove, which are also not needed for this ending.

Note: If you find a Flashlight during the playthrough, turn it around and take two Batteries.

The mother has opened the window, so we can go outside. If you have the car key, use it and take the item from the trunk. It could be a Hammer, Screwdriver, Lantern, or another item.

If you picked up the screwdriver, go to the bathroom and open the grate between the toilet and the washing machine to take the next item. For this ending, you won't need the steps, and you can get rid of the extra item (screwdriver) by unscrewing the mop.

For further progression, you'll need a Charger. It can be found in the pull-out drawers: in the hallway, kitchen, bedroom, and living room. To inspect the room with the TV, wait until the father steps away to check messages (you can send a fake message from the PC) or goes to the toilet. Additionally, you'll definitely need a Light Bulb — it can be found in the same places.

  • Password for the computer in the main character's room: Andrew2002.

After getting the light bulb, install it in the pantry and take all the useful items. This could be Insect Spray, Hammer (not needed for this playthrough), and Radio. You can also use the small key on the wall cabinet — inside, there is often Sleeping Pills.

Insert three batteries into the radio in the pantry to free up space in the inventory and prepare for the escape. All that's left is to find the Anti-Grease Spray, put the father to sleep with the sleeping pills, find out the code from the father's laptop, figure out the password from the control panel, lock the mother in the pantry, and you can escape. But first things first.

  • Anti-Grease is often found in one of the kitchen cabinets. If the item is not there, check the bathroom.
  • We've already talked about the Charger. Use it to charge the father's laptop.
  • The password for the father's laptop consists of the word Gennady and three random digits. They can be found by turning off the fan in the kitchen and looking at the blades.
  • When you unlock the laptop, find the Control Panel Code in the emails.
  • Apply the Sleeping Pills to the father's cup in front of the TV.
  • Use the Anti-Grease and Clean Cloth on the control panel next to the front door.
  • Before escaping, turn on the radio in the pantry, and when the mother goes there to turn it off, lock the door with the nightstand on the left. Hide in the bathroom beforehand to have enough time to do this.
  • Enter the password for the control panel and open the main gates.
  • When you lock the mother in the pantry, escape through the window and run to the opening gates in front of the car.
  • Yay! I successfully escaped through the gates and now I can hang out with my friends. Just not sure how I'll get home after this...

Ending #3

Players report getting this ending when escaping through the gates. However, simply getting outside will give you the second ending. To activate the required script, you'll need to time it right and approach the closing gates just as they are almost shut. One of the parents will try to catch the main character, but they will be pinned by the gates.

  • Unbelievable... I was almost caught, but the gates played their part and delayed the parents. I hope they don't send me to an orphanage after this :0

Ending #4

After the introductory cutscene, look around and turn on the computer. Enter the password Andrew2002, then open the email menu on the desktop. The first contact will be Dad — you can send him a fake message from an anonymous user.

The father will go to the bedroom to read the SMS message, and you should inspect the living room — the room with the TV where football is being broadcast. However, we recommend checking the nightstand next to the exit first. In the second drawer, there might be a random item. In our case, it was a Charger, but it is not needed for this ending.

While the father is busy, run to the living room and inspect all the openable cabinets. Behind one of them, there will be an item — in our case, a Battery (not needed in this playthrough, just like the charger). There might also be a Screwdriver here: check the cabinets near the TV.

Leave the room before the first parent arrives, then head to the bathroom (if you have a screwdriver). Between the washing machine and the toilet, there is a grate on the floor — use the tool here and pick up one of the items (in our case, it's Sleeping Pills, but a small key for the padlock cabinet in the pantry, which also contains sleeping pills, often appears here). Continue exploring the room and find the Mop. Turn it so the long part faces you to find a screw. Use the screwdriver to unscrew it — you will get the first Step.

On the washing machine, you will see Laundry Detergent, and next to the mop, you can find a Dirty Rag. These items are not needed for this ending, so ignore them.

Head to the parents' bedroom — the door is behind the father sitting on the couch. To the right of the entrance is a vanity table with a mirror. On it, you can find a Hairpin. Use it on the locked drawer in this table to get an item (in our case, a Light Bulb).

In this room, you can use the charger on the father's laptop to find out the control panel code. However, this is not needed for our ending. To the right of the PC, there is a shelf with a vase. You can pick it up and turn it over, but in this case, the father will hear the noise and come to check. If you don't have free space in your inventory, first pick up the flower and put it in the vase, then take the Key from the floor. Turn around and hide in the closet. Also, make sure you've put everything back in its place beforehand.

If you didn't have time to check all the drawers in the room with the TV, now is the time to do it — the father will go to the bathroom.

Run to the pantry and install the light bulb to turn on the light. If you look between the shelf on the right and the padlock cabinet, you can find a bug and take the Car Key through the wall (but this is not the only place where the key spawns; it can also be found in the safe in the bedroom closet).

To open the safe in the bedroom, use one of the following combinations (left to right).

First Combination

  • Top row: White, Blue, Yellow;
  • Middle row: Red, Red, Red;
  • Bottom row: Orange, Yellow, White.

Second Combination

  • Top row: Orange, White, Blue;
  • Middle row: Yellow, Green, White;
  • Bottom row: Green, Yellow, Yellow.

Third Combination

  • Top row: Red, White, Yellow;
  • Middle row: Red, Orange, Green;
  • Bottom row: Orange, Yellow, Red.

Fourth Combination

  • Top row: Green, Green, Orange;
  • Middle row: White, Blue, Blue;
  • Bottom row: Yellow, Green, Blue.

Fifth Combination

  • Top row: White, Blue, Green;
  • Middle row: Orange, White, Orange;
  • Bottom row: Red, Orange, Green.

Sixth Combination

  • Top row: White, Orange, Red;
  • Middle row: Red, Yellow, Blue;
  • Bottom row: Blue, Green, Blue.

Note: The combination may change! Orient yourself by the Rubik's Cube in the main character's room!

Also, find the Insect Spray in the pantry. But sometimes it appears under the sink in the kitchen or in other cabinets.

During this time, the father may step away to check his messages on the phone. Upon his return, the character often peeks into the hero's room, so be careful.

Return to the pantry and find the Radio on the left shelf. If you found the batteries and took them into your inventory, insert them into the radio to get rid of unnecessary items. Now you need to lure the mother out of the kitchen using the doorbell. While she is distracted, run to the kitchen, turn off the extractor hood, open the lids on the pots and pan, then check the freezer. Inside will be Frozen Meat. Before leaving the kitchen, turn the extractor hood back on and close all the lids.

These actions will make the mother open the window in the kitchen, through which you can go out into the yard.

Use the car key on the car trunk and take one of the items (in our case, it's a Hammer). Pass by the window in a crouch so the father doesn't notice the main character. Otherwise, he will go to check this place.

So, you have the first step — you took the wooden plank from the mop. The second one can be obtained using the frozen meat, but first, it needs to be thawed. To do this, approach the dog to attract the mother's attention. She will go to check, and you put the meat in the microwave and wait for it to thaw. In one of the cabinets above the microwave, you can get the Anti-Grease Spray (useless in this walkthrough). In the kitchen, you can also find Nails in one of the cabinets on the wall opposite the stove.

In most cases, you won't have time to take the meat and escape through the window. The simplest way is to return to the room, wait for the mother to come to the kitchen, and then lure her out again using the doorbell.

Return to the yard and place the thawed meat in the bowl. The dog will be distracted, and you can take the second Step.

Be warned that using each step will trigger the father, so do it gradually and repeat after he says his final line about imagining things. Also, do not apply the steps to the ladder if the father has gone to the bathroom. While you wait, you can find the watering Hose by the gate. Lead it to the blue barrel next to the ladder and turn on the tap. This way, you will get the third Step. As usual, before hammering in the steps and making noise, put all the items back in their places.

When you are ready, nail all the steps to the ladder and climb up to the attic. Spray the insect spray to pick up the Crowbar. If you are missing any items, you can use the crowbar in the closet on the floor.

Return to your room and distract your father with a fake message through the computer. When he steps away, add the sleeping pills to his cup.

Run to the attic and use the crowbar on the boards covering the hole in the roof. Follow the roof to the opposite side of the house and jump onto the hay.

This way, you will escape the house and get the fourth ending:

  • It was quite high, but the soft pile of hay saved my legs from breaking, and I successfully escaped. Hooray! Now I can go play with my friends.

Ending #5

To get this ending, you need to use the doorbell to drive the mother crazy. Be careful, as with each subsequent activation of the doorbell, the character will move and react faster, eventually even starting to run. You will have to hide behind the kitchen door immediately after interacting with the doorbell, then run to your room (the mother will very often check if the main character is doing homework on her way back). Eventually, she will lose her temper, open the gate, and run to your friends, allowing you to escape through the front door.

  • How silly it was to leave the gate open. I do enjoy solving puzzles, but I couldn't pass up such an easy opportunity :D

Ending #6

This ending implies that you first need to escape the house using Ending #4 (escape through the roof and jump onto the hay), and then head to the river and jump into it. It is important not to run towards the road on the right side, as this will trigger the ending script. From the haystack, run to the left and find the water. Enter it and stay there for some time. The main character will die, and you will get this ending:

  • If you don't think about yourself, at least think about your parents before doing something like this…

Ending #7

To get this ending, you need to use in-game cheats and escape the house in a matter of seconds. The developer has already added a mod menu to the game, so you can experiment on your own.

  • Now I can show off to my friends how I escape from my parents in seconds. No, no, I definitely didn't use cheats!

Ending #8

This ending implies that the player has found a new way to leave the house. Currently, you can get it by trying to escape through the roof (Ending #4) and jumping not onto the hay, but next to it, preferably on the right side. First, the hero will fall onto the fence: keep pressing the forward movement button to get him to freedom.

You can also use various bugs to climb objects and try to escape from the house. For example, try climbing onto the doghouse. Surely there are other ways to get this ending. If you know about them and want to help supplement the guide, write about it in the comments.

How to Get to the Backrooms — A Schoolboy's Nightmare

The developer from the Linked Squad team often leaves various Easter eggs and unobvious endings in their projects. One such bonus in SchoolBoy Runaway is the Backrooms, which any player can access.

It's quite simple to do. If you are playing without the mod menu (cheats):

  • Get out of the house by any means (you can use the roof escape, the gate, or the front gate). Once you are outside, do not run towards the road or follow the path, as this will trigger the script for one of the endings;
  • In front of the gate between the two houses, the main character's friends are standing. Run past them and head towards the horizon;
  • Soon the map will literally end, and you will be able to fall under the textures;
  • After a while, the main character will find himself in the Backrooms. Wander through the empty long corridors until you encounter the ink spider;
  • No matter how you try to hide, it will catch up with the protagonist, who will then wake up on his couch.

If you are playing with the mod menu:

  • Activate the Noclip cheat and go under the house textures;
  • When you are below, deactivate the cheat code to have the hero end up in the Backrooms.
