Baldur's Gate 3 Review Bombed on Steam Due to Sven Vincke's TGA 2024 Speech

Astro Bot was named Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. Not all players agreed with the winner's choice, but some went too far in expressing their dissatisfaction.

Traditionally, the main award is presented by the winner of the previous The Game Awards, so this year, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke was invited to the stage. Let's recall that his Baldur's Gate 3 won as many as five Game of the Year awards at leading ceremonies like the same TGA and Golden Joystick Awards in 2023. Since it was Sven Vincke who opened the envelope with the winner of The Game Awards 2024, players review bombed Baldur's Gate 3 on Steam.

In just 24 hours, the game has already received over 470 negative reviews with some interesting comments, the authors of which directly write that the reason was Astro Bot, which won Game of the Year. However, one of the reviews clarified the situation a little — it seems that gamers misunderstood Sven Vincke's speech before announcing the winner:

The oracle told me that the Game of the Year 2025 is going to be made by a studio who found the formula to make it up here on stage. It's stupidly simple, but somehow it keeps on getting lost. A studio makes a game because they want to make a game they want to play themselves. They created it because it hadn't been created before. They didn't make it to increase market share. They didn't make it to serve the brand. They didn't have to meet arbitrary sales targets, or fear being laid off if they didn't meet those targets.
— Sven Vincke

Sven Vincke's criticism was aimed at greedy publishers, but it seems his words caused confusion. For this reason, some players decided that this was how the head of Larian Studios decided to praise the creators of Astro Bot, working under the leadership of Sony with its questionable decisions.

As for the results of The Game Awards 2024, we wrote about them in detail here.
