AMD reveals FSR 4 as a major leap over FSR 3.1

At CES 2025, AMD introduced its latest image scaling technology, FSR 4, with a live comparison against the current FSR 3.1. The demonstration took place using the game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on the Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card, powered by AMD's RDNA 4 architecture.

The test utilized a challenging scene rendered at 1920×1080 pixels, scaled to 4K resolution. Even in performance mode, where details are often sacrificed, FSR 4 delivered superior image quality compared to its predecessor. Observers noted that even compressed footage highlighted the new technology's ability to handle complex visuals with clarity.

AMD selected a demanding scenario for the test, featuring large objects, particle effects, and transparent surfaces—elements that have historically posed challenges for scaling technologies, including FSR and DLSS. Despite these obstacles, FSR 4 excelled, showcasing significant advancements in visual fidelity.

Although FSR 4 demonstrated remarkable results when scaling to 4K, questions remain about its performance at lower target resolutions, where fewer rendering pixels are available. However, the initial impression of AMD's new technology suggests a significant leap forward in image scaling capabilities.
