The new Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D turned out to be not as powerful as expected

AMD has shed some light on the gaming performance of its upcoming flagship Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D processors. Contrary to expectations, the new products, according to company representatives, will show results "comparable" to the already well-established Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which many consider one of the best gaming CPUs on the market.

Martijn Boonstra, AMD's Product and Business Development Manager, stated that the company expects the 9950X3D and 9900X3D to deliver "generally similar gaming performance" compared to the 9800X3D. He explained that in some games that utilize more cores and threads, the new products might perform slightly better, while in others optimized for single-CCD configurations, the result might be slightly worse.

This statement somewhat surprised the community, given the impressive specifications of the new processors. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D has 16 cores with a frequency of up to 5.7 GHz and 144 MB of cache memory (L2 + L3), while the Ryzen 9 9900X3D offers 12 cores with a frequency of up to 5.5 GHz and 140 MB of cache. For comparison, the 9800X3D has 8 cores, a frequency of up to 5.2 GHz, and 104 MB of cache, demonstrating a significant difference in the processors' specifications.

Prices for the new processors have not yet been announced; AMD promises to reveal this information closer to the start of sales, which is expected in the first quarter of 2025.
