ChatGPT Turns Video Director: OpenAI Integrates Sora into Chatbot

OpenAI has announced ambitious plans to integrate its AI-powered video generation tool, Sora, into its flagship product—ChatGPT. The news emerged during a private developer discussion on Discord, where Sora project lead Rohan Sahai revealed details of the company’s strategy.
Since its release in December 2023, Sora has been positioned as a professional tool for filmmakers and creative studios, capable of generating 20-second AI-powered videos. However, OpenAI now aims to significantly broaden its audience. A key step in this expansion is embedding Sora directly into the ChatGPT interface, allowing millions of users to create videos without leaving the familiar chat environment.
According to Sahai, the integration will come with compromises: the Sora version in ChatGPT will have limited functionality compared to the standalone web app, which offers advanced editing tools and scene composition. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also developing a standalone mobile app for Sora and is actively recruiting engineers for the project. But the biggest surprise was the announcement of an AI image generator built on Sora’s technology. Despite ChatGPT already featuring DALL-E 3, this new system could surpass its predecessor in photorealism.
By merging Sora with ChatGPT, OpenAI is not only intensifying competition with industry giants like Google and Meta but also creating a multimodal platform where text, images, and video become part of a unified creative process. This move could redefine AI-powered content creation, turning chatbots into all-in-one production studios.
Experts note that this kind of integration will accelerate AI adoption among everyday users but also raise concerns about copyright and the ethics of synthetic media. Addressing these challenges is likely to be OpenAI’s next big test.
