PS3 Updated to Version 4.92 — Mandatory Blu-ray Patch
March 5, 2025, 04:55 PM

Sony has released an unexpected 4.92 update for the PlayStation 3, a console that originally launched back in 2006. Available from March 5, 2025, this update continues the tradition of annual "technical injections" for a system that officially lost major support more than a decade ago.
The 200MB update introduces two key changes:
- System optimization – Sony claims improved stability and UI responsiveness, which is particularly beneficial for users with aging or modified hard drives.
- New Blu-ray encryption – Without this patch, Blu-ray playback will be disabled, highlighting an ongoing fight against piracy even for legacy media.
Users can download the update via the console’s built-in system manager or transfer it from a PC using an external drive—an installation method familiar to PS3-era gamers. Notably, the previous 4.91 patch was released more than a year ago, in February 2024.
