Joy-Con for Switch 2 May Function as a Computer Mouse

New Nintendo patents reveal details about the future Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2, showcasing their impressive versatility. Documents indicate that the company is developing technology that allows Joy-Cons to function as a computer mouse. This is supported not only by patent filings but also by hints in the official console trailer, where the controllers are shown gliding across a surface, mimicking mouse movements.
One patent describes how a Joy-Con can be held horizontally, with an optical sensor facing downward to enable cursor control on a flat surface—similar to a traditional computer mouse. Interestingly, this functionality may not be exclusive to Joy-Cons but could also extend to a new split-controller with a more conventional design. This innovation opens up new possibilities for games requiring precise input, such as strategy games or first-person shooters.
Additionally, the patents mention the use of magnetic attachments for accessories. For example, Joy-Cons could connect to wrist straps via magnets, enhancing both comfort and security. The documents also reference a charging dock where controllers can be placed for recharging.
While patents don’t always translate into final products, Nintendo’s hints and active development of these technologies suggest that such features could make their way into the Switch 2. The company is expected to reveal more details about the new console on April 2 during a special Nintendo Direct.
