Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is a complete edition of the role-playing action game set in the futuristic universe of Final Fantasy XV. You can expect new bosses and equipment, all previously released expansions and add-ons, as well as a new mode. The events of the game tell the story of Noctis Lucis Caelum, the heir to the kingdom of Lucis and the holder of eyes that can sense the death of others.
Genre and Gameplay
Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition is an enhanced and refined version of Final Fantasy XV, containing the add-ons from the first season pass, all patches, and content from the original. However, this edition is not complete, as the developers released new add-ons as part of the second season pass in 2019.
Royal Edition was released on March 6, 2018, for both Xbox One and PS4, as well as for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, which showcase higher-quality graphics. On the same day, a separately developed PC version of Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition was released.
Story Add-ons for Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition
During the gameplay of Final Fantasy XV, the main character Noctis temporarily parts ways with one of his companions—Gladiolus, Prompto, or Ignis. The add-ons tell what each of these characters did in their solo journey and culminate in a challenging boss battle.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Gladiolus was released on March 28, 2017. Gladiolus ventures into abandoned caves to face the trials of Gilgamesh, the master of blades, to prove his strength and skills as the King's bodyguard. He is accompanied by Cor Leonis, who has previously completed the trials. The combat system has been refined, while leveling up, magic, and loot collection have been removed. The action takes place in a few corridor-like locations.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto was released on June 27, 2017. Captured by the Niflheim Empire, Prompto finds himself in a military base where monstrous experiments are conducted on children and Magitek soldiers are grown. After escaping, he learns the horrifying truth about his birth and tries to prepare for a reunion with his friends, aided by Aranea. In addition to his pistol, Prompto can find a submachine gun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and grenades. All of this will come in handy to suppress several types of enemies. Side quests have also appeared.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis was released on December 13, 2017. It differs from the previous add-ons with a well-developed script and clearly defined motivations for Ignis. The story tells a short but very emotional tale. The player finds themselves in the city of Altissia, where they must fight against soldiers and bosses of the Niflheim Empire. The combat system has shifted towards magic—there are fire, ice, and electricity spells. The gameplay is enhanced by a grappling hook for quick movement across buildings and numerous giant enemies. There are no leveling up or side quests.
Multiplayer in Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition
Cooperative multiplayer for 4 players was added on November 15, 2017, in the expansion Final Fantasy XV: Comrades. Initially, the player creates their character in an editor equipped with a full set of options and minor adjustments, and then goes through training where the newly minted hero masters the unique abilities of ancient kings.
Formally, Comrades is related to the universe of the film — Kingsglaive and takes place after Chapter 13 of Final Fantasy XV. The expansion features a new storyline for cooperative play, as well as team missions.
Players will need to defeat dozens of mobs and bosses, upgrade their skills, gear, and weapons. In the game world, you can find Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis to battle against. Multiplayer evolves through expansions, for example, with new clothing from the film.
Other features of the edition:
- Improved graphics;
- Refined combat system;
- Added the ability to switch between characters and control them during battles;
- A first-person mode was added, which can be switched to at any moment;
- An alternative option was added for Chapter 13, considered by many to be the worst in Final Fantasy XV;
- New cutscenes and side quests were introduced in the main game.
