Tropico 6 is the continuation of the dictator simulator of a banana republic. This time, the world is in political turmoil — the radio broadcasts that the plans for building the Wall have been confirmed, the UK is leaving the European Union, and that means El Presidente must get back to business. Citizens are in dire need of a wise and farsighted ruler who can foresee the future and lead the country to prosperity.

Continuing your rule on the island, you can take advantage of completely new mechanics and tools for the Tropico series. Now you will have the opportunity to manage multiple islands during the campaign and even connect them into a single network using bridges or tunnels. You also won't have to build your own monuments and landmarks — send your agents around the world and simply steal the wonders of the world, whether it's the Sphinx or the Statue of Liberty.

Genre

Tropico 6 is a city-building and economic strategy game with elements of a political system simulator. A classic sequel, developing the ideas of Tropico 4 and Tropico 5 in their bigger and better form, but not offering anything revolutionary new.

The game has migrated to Unreal Engine 4, resulting in significantly improved graphics and textures, but the developers spent most of their time transferring game mechanics, and for all the innovations (larger maps and a higher number of inhabitants), you need to thank the new engine.

Game World

Tropico 6 offers colorful and well-designed map options, the best in the series, with over 50 in total. Among them are archipelagos with many small islands and medium-sized islands, as well as maps with one large island — but this is not just a piece of land like in previous games.

The landscape of each map has been approached creatively, adding bays and straits, mountains and canyons, inland lakes and various geological formations like volcanoes or asteroid craters, making you want to play on each map and build it up completely.

Periodically, disasters occur, such as floods or tsunamis, which destroy buildings and at the very least break all plans, and at the most force you to cling to the possibility of further progress.

Gameplay

The most significant change has been the increase in the settler limit several times over — a logical decision, given the expanded game world. Different islands can be specialized, one made agricultural, the second industrial, and the third a tourist and cultural center.

The research system has been reworked, now half of it unlocks new political opportunities and decrees, allowing you to become the greatest dictator in the world. The other half of the research unlocks buildings and some special structures, such as an offshore company or a tourist center. With enough money, all of this can be bought.

Otherwise, expect classic Tropico with cosmetic changes, which are returned mechanics from previous games in the series. For example, the Pirate Cove will allow you to raid passing ships and kidnap people for your colony.

Election speeches have returned: give speeches about breakthroughs, make promises you can't keep, and then blame failures on the treacherous West (or East) and continue fooling the populace. Glory to Tropico!

Tropico 6 offers more variations of the same buildings than any previous Tropico: their total number is brought to 150. You can build a Caribbean paradise, an industrial hub, or an agrarian banana republic.

Storyline

Tropico 6 features a single-player campaign in the form of a set of 15 scenarios. By and large, they are a continuation of the training from 5 missions, so play them together to feel more confident in the sandbox and multiplayer.

There is no global storyline between missions; they tell different stories. The first, for example, will tell how El Presidente met Penultimo — his servant, press secretary, and advisor, and the following — about their further adventures.

For example, how thanks to the advice and humble requests of the faithful Penultimo, as well as his incredible genius, El Presidente declared independence from the Crown. How he confidently steered the state during the world wars, managed to withstand the tension of the two superpowers during the cold war, and also found new friends in the new, multipolar world. And Penultimo stood by and gave advice — on how to complete this or that scenario.

If you have already played previous Tropico games, you can ignore this component, added at the last moment just for the sake of it, although funny dialogues and ridiculous situations happen regularly.

Single-player

As usual in strategies, when creating a new game, different starting conditions are set — the initial era, population size, the amount of money in the treasury, and many difficulty options.

From the city-building simulator — building various buildings for your residents — houses, plantations, mines, workshops, laboratories, and factories. Palace customization has appeared — all its elements from fences and lawns to pools and domes on the roof. There are also global buildings, like an air or sea port.

From the economic strategy in Tropico 6, extraction/purchase of raw materials, their processing, and sale. There are developed production chains, and the higher the processed product, the more money the local budget will receive. Each era expands the selection of resources and processing options.

It is also necessary to monitor the provision of housing and work for people. By opening new technologies and moving to the next era, a large selection of upgrades for already built buildings appears, increasing their productivity. Trade in the game is simple and automated — just buy a trade license and allow the export of goods.

Politics is an important part of Tropico 6. You will have to go from a Crown colony to an independent state capable of terrorizing the entire planet with its threats, shocking with human rights violations and "universal values." At the beginning of the game, the governor's main task is the loyalty of the population. Then he can recruit or agitate revolutionaries to declare independence from the Crown.

There are even more activities at the end of the game — in the era of the "cold war" you need to maneuver between the powers that be, fulfilling their tasks. Since any idea is contagious, your population will split into different factions. If at first there are only two in the game — monarchists and revolutionaries, then communists, capitalists, and other guys will come later. You will have to please all of them to avoid a riot.

Multiplayer

Reviews and ratings

I can’t judge Tropico 6 as a continuation of the series, because I haven’t played the original part.

As a standalone game, Tropico 6 is a very beautiful and atmospheric strategy simulator. The graphics in the game look great, and the music introduces you to the atmosphere in a matter of seconds. You quickly get used to the game, it is not very difficult to understand and you can figure it out in a short time, after which you can play for fun

Compared to previous series, Tropico 6 is very unfinished. I played Tropico 5 and 4, many gameplay mechanics were lost in part 6. Development of the characteristics of El Presidente and the system of the family of rulers.

Of the innovations, I noticed only a new system of islands, that is, a new map and a building system for it.

I played for 51 hours and I will say that the average fps is 40, with high settings. And not without crashes, especially the last one. I did the mission for a very long time. Departures occurred every hour, at the moments when autosaves occurred.

I wouldn’t recommend it to a beginner, only for fans of the series. And then I advise you to wait until the price of the game is lower, and perhaps they will finish it.
