A group of The Witcher 3 modders, known for restoring cut content, has shared an extensive account of the game's early development history. The enthusiasts revealed intriguing details about the initial version of the story, which reportedly spanned 150 hours of gameplay.
- The game originally had the subtitle “A Time of Sword and Axe”;
- It featured a focus system akin to Fallout’s VATS, allowing players to target monsters' weak points;
- Early builds included more frequent transitions between Velen, Skellige, and Novigrad;
- The choice between Yennefer and Triss carried greater weight—one of them would be absent from the final third of the game;
- Iorveth, the elf from The Witcher 2, played a significant role in the story;
- Novigrad had a multi-stage quest similar to the Kaer Morhen siege, involving Geralt recruiting allies for a heist;
- The Bloody Baron’s storyline was different and continued until the game's ending;
- Endings were more ambiguous;
- In one quest, Geralt and Avallac’h traveled to Night City from Cyberpunk 2077;
- Gwent didn’t exist, but dice poker and arm wrestling from the first two games made a return.
These insights come from the REDkit development tools, which allowed the team to delve into the game's database, containing nearly all development text. The first volume of their findings spans 584 pages.
