Doom: The Dark Ages Game Director Responds to Criticism of Flexible Difficulty Settings

Some gamers have reacted negatively to the new features in Doom: The Dark Ages, which include expanded difficulty settings through adjustable gameplay parameters. Players are concerned that these changes might make the game too easy to complete. Recently, Game Director Hugo Martin addressed this criticism.

According to the developer, the additional options for difficulty customization are designed to make the game engaging for both newcomers and veteran gamers, as players will have the ability to adjust various gameplay elements themselves.

I don’t agree with that. Really, when you think about options like the sliders, the policy was it has to be good both for the white belts and the black belts. You know, if we’re gonna allow you to slow the game down, we have to enable you to speed the game up.

He explained that these settings not only make the game easier but can also make it much more challenging if the player desires.

As a reminder, in Doom: The Dark Ages, players will not only be able to choose the difficulty level but also adjust game speed, enemy aggressiveness, and the amount of damage dealt and received.

Doom: The Dark Ages is set to release on May 15th this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It was also revealed earlier that the game can be completed using just a shield if desired.
