Why do you need a chopping block, tanning rack, and adze? Can you use these items? And how do they affect the workbench level upgrade?

To upgrade the crafting station, you need to place near it items that are marked in the «Crafting» section with a star and a footnote «Workbench: upgrade». There are four such items in total: a chopping block, a tanning rack, an adze, and a tool shelf. They need to be discovered in exactly this order, created, and placed next to the workbench. Each of them upgrades the workbench by one level. If all four items are placed next to the workbench, its level will be raised to the fifth. First of all, you need to make these items available:

  • To obtain the blueprint for the chopping block, you need to collect flint, which can be found along the shoreline of a body of water. To craft the chopping block, you will need 10 units of flint and 10 units of wood;
  • To make the blueprint for the tanning rack available, you need to kill a deer. To create a tanning rack, you need to take at least 5 units of hide from the deer, also 10 units of wood, 15 units of flint, and 20 leather scraps (which can be taken from a boar);
  • To unlock the adze, you need to craft bronze nails from bronze ingots and collect wood from birch trees (you need a specific type of valuable wood). For this, you will need: 10 units of fine wood, 3 units of bronze, and a forge.
  • To gain access to the tool shelf, you need to obtain 4 units of iron and 4 units of obsidian, 10 units of fine wood, and also have a forge nearby. When the tool shelf is ready, it must be placed along the wall inside the building where the workbench is located.

As you can see, to create the adze and tool shelf, a forge is needed.

After you have created all or some of these items, they need to be placed outside the building where the workbench is located. If the workbench level does not increase, then the item is placed too far away, try to place it closer. In most cases, there will be no need to do this, as well as to place items inside the building. The workbench level is written on the star to the right in the «Workbench» tab, the maximum level currently is fourth. However, there is a possibility that after the release of the full version of the game, it will be possible to upgrade the crafting station even more.

For now, players can explore what can be crafted and upgraded on the fourth level workbench. Items created on such a workbench will greatly ease your life in the wild lands of Valheim.
