Guide: How to Earn Gold in Norland and Where to Find Sacred Rings

No strategy game is complete without gold or its equivalent, and Norland is no exception. Sacred rings are a valuable resource needed to hire lords and perform rituals. Knowing how to manage both and finding new sources of income is key to the successful development of your kingdom. In this guide, we will discuss how to effectively earn gold and where to find sacred rings to maintain the stability and prosperity of your city.

In Norland, gold serves more as a currency than a means of accumulation. You need to monitor the balance to ensure it doesn't go negative, but don't be afraid to spend gold; the main thing is to ensure a stable inflow. There is no way to mine gold in the game, and other assets for independent conversion into coins were not available in the early version of the game. Therefore, the only way to earn is through trade. It is represented by two main options:

  • Merchant or better than nothing. This is because he buys your goods cheaper and sells his more expensive than what you can generally find in the world. However, you can sell him more goods, although not indefinitely — at large volumes of sale, a discount will begin to apply. Among merchants, there are often characters with high trading skills, which can further worsen your position if you don't have a similarly skilled lord. In general, it's not a profitable option, but it's indispensable.
  • Trade agreements with neighbors. They will sell you their goods cheaper and buy yours more expensive than the Merchant. However, the daily volumes of buying and selling are limited — from 10 to 30 units of goods, and the selection of available goods is not always large. Nevertheless, this is the most profitable way to obtain gold at the time of the game's early access release.

How to Earn Gold in Norland?

We have figured that out. But, as the classic said, to sell something unnecessary, you first need to find or make something unnecessary, and we have no money. So let's discuss the general scheme of earning gold in Norland through the production of this very unnecessary:

Buy raw materials => process them => sell the final product.

At the beginning of the game, it is most profitable to sell beer, fragrant ale, and flour. Later, with the development of the city, you can earn money by selling weapons and armor, but this will require a different level of management and the city as a whole. Do not worry about buying raw materials (ore, hops, wheat, wood) — if you do not overdo it, the final product will still find a buyer and bring profit. However, if you cannot supply the goods in the required volume, the trade agreement will be terminated.

Even a small production is enough to start:

We do not recommend selling tools and paper, which are necessary from the mid-game onwards. Their production requires wood, which is a very scarce resource. Assume that there will not be enough wood for everything, and you need to save it for your own needs.

Each trade deal between feudal lords is taxed at 150 gold. If you are currently short of funds but see the opportunity for a profitable deal — borrow money from allies to ensure a «safety cushion,» and make agreements. Yes, there will be a period of accumulating gold to repay the loan as soon as possible, but later the trade routes will pay off handsomely.

Most importantly: even before concluding a trade deal, set the «trade automatically» flag on the trade panel, otherwise, the goods will not be shipped every day.

Keep in mind that as the city develops, the game itself will terminate trade agreements so that there are buyers for your more expensive goods, such as paper, weapons, and armor. If you feel that you are not yet ready to move forward, do not build the corresponding buildings.

Where to Find Sacred Rings?

Sacred rings are a valuable resource that lords use as luxury items. The player can use them through the King to reward distinguished individuals and boost their mood. Usually, rings accumulate in the lords' inventory and become a symbol of status. Sometimes they are required for specific missions. Gambling lords can lose or win them in games with other lords, both local and foreign (this is not considered a gift). There are several ways to obtain sacred rings:

Buy from the Merchant at full price. One ring costs as much as ten sacks of flour or several good swords, making it one of the most expensive items. This is a legal, «white» item, the possession of which will not raise any questions from anyone around.

Ransom from bandits on the black market. Periodically, a camp with bandits appears in each location, raiding the surroundings. Sometimes they have sacred rings in their loot, which they then sell to those who are not squeamish, as notified on the global map. Keep in mind that this is stolen / taken from the dead goods, the possession of which will spoil relations with neighboring lords.

Take by force from other lords. You can capture rings during a raid or subjugation of another faction by capturing their city and robbing the local nobles. Or even take them off the corpses of slain enemies.

Receive as a reward. Very rarely, rings can be obtained as a reward for completing certain quests or missions. Such quests will be of increased difficulty and require high readiness.

Trade is not always good, often due to a lack of goods on your side

***

Effective financial management is the key to success in Norland. Use trading opportunities, develop production, and do not forget about external sources of income such as loans, tributes, and contracts. By accumulating enough gold and sacred rings, you will be able to expand your influence, strengthen your power, and develop the economy.
