Director of The Flash Reveals Reason for Film's Failure

The 2023 film The Flash is known to be among the biggest box office flops in comic book movie history. Recently, director Andy Muschietti commented in an interview about the reasons behind the film's failure.

According to him, the film partially failed because it couldn't capture the attention of all four quadrants: older men, older women, younger men, and younger women.

The Flash’ failed, among all the other reasons, because it wasn’t a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that. When you spend $200 million making a movie, [Warner Bros.] wants to bring even your grandmother to the theaters. I’ve found in private conversations that a lot of people just don’t care about the Flash as a character. Particularly the two female quadrants. All of that is just the wind going against the film I’ve learned.

In 2023, Comscore PostTrak released demographic survey results about the audience attending the initial screenings of "The Flash":

  • 47% — men over 25;
  • 29% — men under 25;
  • 17% — women over 25;
  • 7% — women under 25.

The Flash grossed $271.4 million with a budget of $200–220 million. On IMDb, the film received a rating of 6.6.

In his interview, Andy Muschietti also mentioned that he still plans to direct a film based on Shadow of the Colossus. Additionally, he revealed the number of planned seasons for the prequel series It: Welcome to Derry.
