Insider Report: Ubisoft Developing a Life Sim Inspired by Animal Crossing with Voxel Graphics and Building Mechanics
Journalist and insider Tom Henderson has revealed that Ubisoft is working on a new project codenamed Alterra. According to early details, the game is a life simulation reminiscent of Animal Crossing, featuring voxel-based graphics.
In Alterra, players will settle on a small island inhabited by creatures called Matterlings. Beyond the island, players can explore numerous other worlds with diverse biomes, unique Matterling species, enemies, and resources. During these adventures, it will also be possible to encounter other players.
The Matterlings are described as having a Funko Pop-like design, drawing inspiration from mythical and real-life animals. Here's an AI-generated concept of their appearance:
Sources also mentioned a building mechanic akin to Minecraft, allowing players to construct various structures. However, gathering the necessary resources will be key. For instance, building an ice fortress would require venturing into snowy worlds to collect the required materials.
The project is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal under the direction of Patrick Redding, known for his work on Gotham Knights. According to Henderson, Alterra has been in development for around 18 months. Interestingly, this game emerged following the cancellation of another voxel-based project that was scrapped after four years in production.
