AMD Claims Edge for Radeon RX 7900 XTX Over RTX 4090 in AI Workloads

AMD has claimed that its Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card delivers superior AI performance compared to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 Super. In benchmarks using the DeepSeek R1 language model, the RDNA 3 architecture-based GPU outperformed its rivals across several scenarios.

According to AMD, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 13% faster than the RTX 4090 when processing models with 7 billion parameters and maintains a 2% lead at 14 billion parameters. However, NVIDIA’s cards pull ahead when workloads scale to 32 billion parameters. Against the RTX 4080 Super, AMD’s flagship GPU boasts a 34% performance advantage.

While AMD GPUs haven’t traditionally been viewed as specialized AI accelerators, the RDNA 3 architecture supports BF16 and INT8 compute operations and includes 192 AI accelerator units. The company has also published a guide for running DeepSeek R1 on its hardware.

It’s worth noting that these benchmarks stem from AMD’s internal testing, meaning real-world results could differ.
