NVIDIA's Latest Update: VSR Now Saves GPU Resources & Adds HDR Video Support

NVIDIA has unveiled major upgrades to its RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR) technology, focusing on reducing power consumption and expanding functionality. According to a January 2025 update, the company overhauled its machine learning algorithms, cutting GPU load by 30% even in maximum quality mode. This makes VSR more accessible to GeForce RTX graphics card owners, including those with older-generation models.

Key Improvements:

  • A redesigned AI model dynamically adjusts GPU workload to minimize resource usage without compromising quality. In "Auto" mode, the system intelligently scales processing power based on content type and user tasks.
  • The technology now upscales HDR video in browsers to match a monitor’s native resolution, addressing quality limitations on streaming platforms.
  • Users can prioritize either image quality ("High" mode) or resource efficiency for gaming and multitasking ("Power Saver" mode). A manual calibration option has also been added for fixed settings.

Previously, many users avoided enabling VSR due to its high power draw (up to 240W), which caused overheating and performance drops in other applications. With reduced GPU demands, the tech now serves as a practical tool for daily use—from upscaling classic films to 4K to enhancing high-res live streams. The feature is built into the updated NVIDIA app and can be activated via the system settings’ "Video" section, where users can also enable a real-time VSR status indicator.

Industry experts highlight that the update not only improves energy efficiency but also broadens VSR’s applications, from gaming sessions with background streaming to professional HDR video editing. The reduced GPU strain could additionally extend hardware longevity, a critical advantage for laptop users.
