RX 7650 GRE Outperforms RTX 4060 in Games — But Only Without RT

AMD has recently expanded its RX 7600 lineup with the introduction of the RX 7650 GRE, a model designed exclusively for the Chinese market. Positioned between the base RX 7600 and the more powerful RX 7600 XT, this new card aims to strike a balance between price and performance. While it shares key specs with its younger sibling—featuring 2,048 cores, 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and a 128-bit bus—it boasts a higher clock speed of 2,695 MHz and a 170W TDP, which is 5W higher than the RX 7600.
In a review by Expreview, the Sapphire RX 7650 GRE Black Diamond Edition (factory-overclocked to 2,810 MHz but tested at stock settings) was compared to the RTX 4060 at 1080p. The results were mixed:
AMD took the lead in games without ray tracing. In Eternal Damnation, the RX 7650 GRE was 42% faster (119 vs. 84 FPS), while in Borderlands 3, the gap was 26% (115 vs. 91 FPS). Across eight tested titles, AMD averaged a 7% performance boost. However, Radeon struggled with ray tracing. In Cyberpunk 2077 (RT Medium settings), the RTX 4060 pulled ahead by 44% (43 vs. 30 FPS), and in Far Cry 6 with RT enabled, it was 12% faster. At 1440p, AMD retained its advantage, though the gap narrowed. 3DMark results also leaned in favor of the RX 7650 GRE, reinforcing its potential in non-RT workloads. However, with ray tracing adoption on the rise, NVIDIA’s offerings may become the preferred choice.
The RX 7650 GRE is positioned as an alternative to the RTX 4060, excelling in traditional gaming scenarios. However, for players prioritizing ray tracing, NVIDIA remains the better choice. As a niche product for the Chinese market—where demand for RT technology still lags behind the focus on stable FPS—the card’s success will depend on whether local gamers are willing to trade ray-traced visuals for higher performance in classic titles. AMD continues its push in the mid-range segment, prioritizing affordability over groundbreaking innovation.
