New Doom: The Dark Ages Gameplay Details Revealed

EDGE interviewed the developers of Doom: The Dark Ages, who shared new gameplay details. This time, the plot will play a more important role, and the levels in the new Doom will be the largest in the history of the series.

Game director and creative director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton took part in the conversation. Below are the most important Doom: The Dark Ages gameplay details from the interview:

  • shield saw will react differently to hitting different objects — armor, flesh, or an energy field;
  • in aiming mode, you can hit the shield to make a dash;
  • shield strikes in general will be the main way to move around the field — no double jumps or dashing as a separate action;
  • the shield can parry blows and reload melee weapons, which will also replenish ammunition;
  • it will also come in handy for solving puzzles like breaking chains with a throw;
  • there will be three types of weapons — a glove for fast, a flail for medium and a mace for slow attacks;
  • mace strikes also replenish resources;
  • some weapons from previous games will return;
  • the levels in Doom: The Dark Ages will be the largest in the history of the games in the series and will be more like a sandbox;
  • completing one level will take about an hour on average;
  • each level will be divided into several parts — for example, a dungeon, a segment on the surface, and so on;
  • id Software planned to add the Atlas mechanoids 8 years ago, hints can be found in previous games;
  • the plot of Doom: The Dark Ages will be an important part of the game and will not be limited to text notes.

EDGE magazine also showed the cover with the Doom Slayer and shared some concept art:

Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The shooter was previously rated 18+ due to the abundance of violent scenes, blood and naked body parts. The system requirements for the PC version can be found here.
