Neil Druckmann Puts an End to the Debate on Whether Joel Was Right The Last of Us: Part 1

Ahead of the premiere of The Last of Us Season 2 based on The Last of Us: Part 2, ING spoke with the actors and showrunners. Among other things, Neil Druckmann shared his opinion on Joel's actions in the first game.
Recall that in the finale of The Last of Us: Part 1, the smuggler learns that Ellie, who has become practically an adopted daughter for him, must die on the operating table for the sake of the ghostly hope of creating a cure for cordyceps. As a result, Joel saves the girl from the Firefly operating room, thereby depriving humanity of a chance for a cure.
It turns out that Neil Druckmann was on the character's side all this time. He is sure that in the hero's place he would have done the same:
I believe Joel was right. If I were in Joel's position, I hope I would be able to do what he did to save my daughter.
His opinion was echoed by The Last of Us co-showrunner Craig Mazin:
That's so interesting, because I think that if I were in Joel's position, I probably would have done what he did. But I'd like to think that I wouldn't. That's the interesting push and pull of the morality of it. And that's why the ending of the first game is so provocative and so wonderful. It just doesn't let you off the hook as a player.
Recall that The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on April 13 on HBO Max. The showrunners previously revealed that the sequel will feature an episode inspired by the Billy and Frank series.
