Mozilla Updates Firefox and Introduces Thundermail Email Service

Mozilla has unveiled major updates to its core products, combining innovations in Firefox 137 with the introduction of the Thunderbird Pro service ecosystem, featuring the Thundermail email platform.
The latest Firefox update turns basic search into an intelligent tool. The address bar now doubles as a calculator—simply enter an equation to get an instant result. But that's just the beginning. Users can switch between search engines, including niche websites, directly from the address bar. Tags like @bookmarks, @tabs, @history, and @actions provide quick access to bookmarks, browsing history, or settings, saving valuable time.
Some features, such as tab grouping by color or name, are being rolled out gradually. However, tech-savvy users can enable them manually via about:config, using flags like browser.urlbar.quicksuggest.enabled. For creative tasks, the built-in PDF editor now supports handwritten signatures and instant navigation through hyperlinks. Meanwhile, Linux and Android users will benefit from hardware-accelerated HEVC video playback, reducing CPU load.
Alongside this, Mozilla has announced the expansion of the Thunderbird Pro ecosystem, with Thundermail as its centerpiece. Designed to challenge the dominance of Google and Microsoft, Thundermail offers:
- The ability to create email addresses with the @thundermail.com domain and sync via the open-source Stalwart Mail Server (written in Rust), supporting JMAP, IMAP, and other protocols.
- A free tier with basic features and premium subscriptions for expanded storage.
- Secure file sharing with encryption, reviving the discontinued Firefox Send project.
- A local AI assistant powered by Flower AI, operating without cloud data transfers.
Both updates reflect Mozilla’s commitment to independent, user-first solutions in an industry dominated by corporate platforms. Firefox 137 enhances competition with Chrome by prioritizing user-centric features. Meanwhile, Thundermail remains in the testing phase, and Firefox 137's new functions are being deployed gradually. By focusing on its community, Mozilla provides tools that users can tailor to their own needs.
