“I Was as Surprised as You”: Mass Effect Writer Denies Rumors About Rewriting the Show for a Wider Audience
Artis Kenderik
A few weeks ago, The Ankler reported that Peter Friedlander had allegedly demanded rewrites for the Mass Effect series to make it “more appealing to non-gamers.”
The news quickly обеспокоило fans — and for good reason. Many still remember adaptations where very little of the original remained intact. The Halo series on Paramount+ faced backlash for straying too far from canon, Netflix canceled Resident Evil after one season, and The Witcher gradually drifted away from its source material — losing a large portion of its audience along the way.
However, lead writer Daniel Casey responded to the rumors in an unexpected way — he says he was just as surprised as everyone else.
I can’t talk about specific details of what I’m writing — I’ve signed an NDA. But for the record: that Ankler article caught me off guard just like it did you. I have no idea where the quote about “non-gaming audiences” came from or who said it — no one has ever told me that.
The Mass Effect series has been in development at Amazon Prime Video since 2021. The showrunner is Doug Jung, with Casey handling the script. It’s known that the story won’t retell the original trilogy — instead, it will take place in a different time period within the canon, after the events involving Commander Shepard. According to reports, the project is now “on the verge” of receiving a full season order.
