Microsoft Brings Full MIDI 2.0 Support to Windows 11 — a First in 40 Years

Microsoft has rolled out a significant update for Windows 11, introducing a public preview of Windows MIDI Services in the latest Canary build (Build 27788). This marks the first major revision of the MIDI standard since its inception nearly 40 years ago.

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) has been the industry standard for transmitting, editing, and storing musical data since 1983. It enables seamless connections between electronic instruments, computers, and other devices, ensuring precise control and synchronization.

Until recently, MIDI 2.0 was primarily available on Apple devices, but Microsoft is now bringing it to Windows users. The company emphasizes that this update is designed to create the "perfect experience for musicians" and lays the groundwork for future improvements. Additionally, the new version retains MIDI 1.0 compatibility on Windows devices running on Arm architecture, expanding possibilities for musicians across different platforms.

Beyond music-related enhancements, Windows 11 Build 27788 introduces other notable features. Users can now seamlessly resume working with OneDrive files across multiple devices, including PCs and iOS/Android smartphones, with a single click. Additionally, the Microsoft Store now allows selective installation of game components, helping users save disk space.
