HP announces the modular EliteBook 8 G1 laptop

HP has unveiled the EliteBook 8 G1, marking its first foray into modular laptop design. This innovative architecture allows users to replace key components in just a few minutes without needing specialized tools. The laptop is built for quick upgrades: the battery, cooling system, SSD storage, RAM, and keyboard can all be swapped out effortlessly. Even the display has been designed with ease of replacement in mind — its self-calibrating module eliminates the need for complex adjustments. Wi-Fi and mobile network adapters are housed in accessible M.2 slots, making them just as easy to upgrade.
The EliteBook 8 G1 offers a choice between AMD and Intel processors, featuring neural processing units (NPUs) capable of up to 60 TOPS, making it well-suited for machine learning tasks. Users can select from three screen sizes — 13, 14, or 16 inches — all with WUXGA resolution (1920×1200). The laptop supports up to 64 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of SSD storage. The 13-inch model will feature integrated memory, while the larger versions will support user upgrades.
The device also features an enlarged touchpad, a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button, and a comprehensive set of ports, including Thunderbolt 4, USB-C/A, and HDMI 2.1. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 ensure stable connectivity, with optional NFC and smart card reader support available. The EliteBook 8 G1 challenges traditional soldered-component laptops, following in the footsteps of modular pioneers like Framework. Official release dates and pricing have yet to be announced, but HP is expected to reveal more details in the coming weeks.
