Sony Upgrades PS5 and PS4 — Enhanced Interface and Security

Sony is rolling out updates almost simultaneously across three generations of consoles, expanding the possibilities for gamers. While the PS5 delights users with fresh features, engineers haven’t forgotten the iconic PS3, which turns 18 this year.

The April update for the flagship console (v.25.02-11.00.00) transforms gaming activities into an interactive guide. Now, task cards display full details while automatically hiding plot spoilers — ideal for those who despise unexpected story twists in recommendations. Visual communicators will appreciate the integration of Unicode 16.0 emojis: chat users can now send not only the Astro Bot laughing emoji, but also 150 new icons. Parental controls have also tightened: when selecting the “16+” age rating, chats and user-generated content are blocked by default, though existing settings remain unchanged.

Despite the twilight of the “four” generation, the system also received patch 12.50. Ostensibly, it’s an optimization of the interface and stability. However, experts suspect that the update bolsters security against hacking, which is particularly crucial for the online modules of the latest games. Interestingly, without publicly announcing its anti-piracy efforts, Sony continues its quiet modernization — likely to maintain the loyalty of its 92 million console owners.

These updates showcase Sony’s hybrid strategy: introduce innovations for the PS5, maintain the PS4 as a “workhorse,” and preserve the legacy of the PS3. This approach transforms the PlayStation ecosystem into a multi-layered service, where each generation finds its own niche.
