VGTimes Editors Honestly About the Nintendo Switch 2 Console
Yesterday, the new Nintendo console, Switch 2, was announced. We couldn't pass by such an important event (not the pointless PS5 Pro) and decided to speak out about it. Below are the opinions of the VGTimes team about the new product from the big N. And here are all the details that are known about the console at this point in time. And don't forget to write in the comments what you think about the new product!
"The same old thing," — Daria Scheglova
Just one look at the Switch 2 makes it obvious who, or rather what, Nintendo is trying to compete with. These are tablets and iPads that tired parents like to hand over to their children so that they don't bother them.
It's hard to say whether this is good or not. But it seems like a logical move for what is still the main portable console on the market. Some things were encouraging — games from the original Switch will be supported. Some things were funny — the seemingly ridiculous predictions that the logo of the new console would be the old one, but with the number two stuck on the side, unexpectedly came true. All that remains is to wait for details and hope that the creators of the console have shown more ingenuity in everything else.
"You didn't understand the Switch 2 announcement," — Marat Yusupov
Unfortunately, the console is poorly represented in the CIS market, so the announcement of the new generation caused, let's say, slight bewilderment. We haven't developed a corresponding gaming culture, and there is no community capable of promoting it to the masses.
The point is this: Switch games fit perfectly into the format of parties or meetings with friends. The console "out of the box" supports the ability to play together on one screen in games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Overcooked. Whether it's co-op leveling or resource trading in Animal Crossing, Switch gaming isn't just a game, it's a lively interaction that builds friendships.
Yes, the format is simple, but it's suitable even for those who aren't familiar with games. The Japanese have "eaten a dog" in creating an atmosphere of fun and easy competition, where the main goal is not victory, but laughter and a good mood. How long has it been since PC gamers experienced something like this with their RTX 4090? "Big" games are rather in a creative crisis, offering sequel after sequel and a minimum of exciting gaming experience.
My personal conclusion: Switch 2 should consolidate the success of the first console as a device for fun co-op gaming, especially since it supports backward compatibility.
"The Wii U story has taught Nintendo nothing," — Alexey Ermolaev
Frankly speaking, we expected something more significant from the new console of the big N than "Switch on maximum settings." The first hybrid was good at the time of its release, when it had no competitors. Today, there is Steam Deck and other similar devices, against which the Switch 2 looks like just another portable. There is a risk that it will get lost among its analogues. A similar situation already happened 13 years ago, when the Wii U was released. It was not possible to repeat the success of the original Wii then.
The main thing that can interest players in the new Nintendo console is first-class exclusives. We are talking about the The Legend of Zelda and Metroid series, which still remain unique. We also hope that Bayonetta will not be forgotten after Hideki Kamiya left Platinum Games, and in the near future we will see a full-fledged fourth part. But backward compatibility is now perceived as a standard for consoles, not an advantage, because it is present on both PS5 and Xbox.
“Fans are delighted, the rest are waiting for Steam Deck 2,” — Dmitry Pyatakhin
Nintendo has finally introduced the world to Switch 2 — the second version of its portable console. As usual, everything has become bigger, more powerful, more beautiful. Personally, I am not a fan of Nintendo games, but I am pleased with several pieces of news at once. Firstly, the backward compatibility of all cartridges of the first version. Secondly, they promise to expand the list of available games so that the device would be interesting not only to fans of Mario and Zelda. Of course, I'm exaggerating, but the first Switch clearly lacked the power for heavy projects. Now the console looks like a serious device.
The new visual design also speaks of a change in course to a more "mature and serious audience". Colorfulness is a thing of the past. Now the basis is a pleasant black color with light splashes of pink (almost flesh-colored) and blue. It is obvious that Switch 2 is getting ready to fight for Steam Deck users. The first version was a little different.
I personally singled out only one interesting feature — the ability of joycons to slide along the surface like a computer mouse. This is because local gamepads have a new sensor, very similar to an optical one. It is absolutely unclear how popular and interesting this feature will become, but at least it is something completely new.
Fans of the first version of the device will definitely be delighted. For everyone else, I would recommend waiting for news about Steam Deck 2, which is obviously just around the corner, and then thinking about buying it.
"A great chance for newcomers to discover the world of Nintendo," — Vladislav Shamshurov
After watching the presentation of the new Nintendo Switch 2 portable console, I was pleasantly surprised that it has become larger. For me, a person who has never had a portable console, this is really important: the screen has increased, and it will be even more interesting to play. Of course, this will add other problems, for example, if the console of the previous generation could easily fit in a large pocket, now, most likely, it will have to be carried in a special case.
Magnetic mounts for joycons seem like a cool idea that will certainly make the gaming process more convenient. This innovation also makes the console more reliable, which is especially important for gamers who prefer to take the device with them often.
The fact that it supports all the games from the first console is also a big plus for newcomers like me. New players will be able to try out old Nintendo games without buying a console of the previous generation. Overall, the game's reveal arouses interest and a desire to try the Nintendo Switch 2, even if you're not familiar with the world of portable gaming devices before.
"It's cool, but time will tell," — Dominika Putyrskaya
It's not that the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 evoked any special emotions in me: firstly, it had been expected for a long time, and secondly, I never even had the first model. But this, of course, doesn't mean that I haven't held it in my hands.
For die-hard Nintendo fans, even the first Switch is a fierce "must-have", which is loved both for its convenience and for its exclusives. I still prefer PC, and I don't like Zelda or Animal Crossing, so I can't share this wild delight. But if you look at it from the fans' point of view, it all looks like this: you are offered a larger screen (I assume it will be OLED right away), magnetic mounts and a bunch of other features for those who seriously kill time in Mario Kart. Why not, actually?
Suddenly, the new model will also allow you to look at The Witcher 3 without tears, since old games should be supported.
"I'll buy it," — Rodion Ilin
