Although Insomniac Games and Sony announced Marvel's Wolverine back in 2021, the project remained completely silent for years — at least officially, not counting leaks. However, last month we finally got to see the gameplay trailer and learn several key details about the upcoming game. We gathered all the essential information about Marvel's Wolverine in this article.
A Brutal Game About a Brutal Hero
Let’s start with what Insomniac Games themselves emphasized during the State of Play presentation when introducing the game’s main features. The studio made it clear from the beginning: Marvel's Wolverine will be “darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac.” According to creative director Marcus Smith, when asked, “Are you going to make a Wolverine game that’s as violent, as visceral, as the character in the comics?” — the answer was a clear yes. Senior community manager Aaron Jason Espinoza described Marvel's Wolverine as a title featuring “fast, fluid, and ferocious combat; exhilarating, action-packed set pieces… while embracing the violent, visceral nature of Wolverine’s comic book origins.”
The creators promise that the tone will differ radically from the more “family-friendly” Marvel superhero games — after all, Logan (Wolverine) is more of an antihero than a traditional comic book protagonist.
And that’s easy to believe: the trailer is full of violent moments. One of the most shocking shows Wolverine driving his adamantium claws up through an enemy’s face — from jaw to skull. Interestingly, this very scene made the game’s director question whether the team had gone “too far,” yet they ultimately decided to keep it in.
What do you think about the fact that Marvel's Wolverine will receive an 18+ rating?
Story
Few story details have been revealed so far. What we know is that Marvel's Wolverine will focus on the theme of memory loss. Logan will be uncovering dark secrets of his past and, driven by revenge, chasing down his enemies across the globe — from the wild forests of Canada to the crowded streets of Tokyo. Who he’s after, and why, remains a mystery. But overall, this sounds like a classic Wolverine tale.
Interestingly, Marvel's Wolverine takes place in the same universe as Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Whether we’ll see Peter Parker or Miles Morales make an appearance remains unclear, but the gameplay trailer does feature other well-known Marvel characters — Mystique and Omega Red.
Mystique is a mutant with the ability to shapeshift into anyone, making her a highly dangerous spy and saboteur. She often switches sides, serving as both ally and enemy of the X-Men. Omega Red, on the other hand, is depicted exclusively as a villain — a Russian mutant supersoldier and one of Wolverine’s deadliest foes. He was created through a Soviet experiment, his body infused with a radioactive metal similar to adamantium, though far less stable.
Who Plays Logan
Insomniac chose Australian actor Liam McIntyre to portray Wolverine. He’s best known for his lead role in the later seasons of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, where he took over the part after the passing of Andy Whitfield.
As with most modern AAA productions, McIntyre not only voices Logan but also performs in motion capture. According to creative director Marcus Smith, the studio wanted an actor who could convincingly embody both the emotional depth and the physicality of the character during combat scenes.
What to Expect from Gameplay
So far, there are no detailed insights into the gameplay of Marvel's Wolverine — not enough to confidently describe its structure. Still, judging by the available footage, it appears to be a traditional third-person linear action game with cinematic cutscenes. In that sense, it seems closer to the Uncharted series than to Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, which take place in open worlds.
One of the Biggest Leaks in History
In 2023, Insomniac Games suffered a massive cyberattack. Hackers from the Rhysida group stole a huge amount of internal data, including development documents, concept art, and — most importantly — early builds of Marvel's Wolverine.
A playable PC build even surfaced online, with long gameplay videos showing several levels. However, it’s worth noting that these were extremely early test versions and do not reflect the quality or visuals of the final product. For example, the graphics look nowhere near the standard seen in the latest official trailer.
The gaming industry showed solidarity with Insomniac after the breach, as the hack not only exposed game content but also compromised employees’ personal data and Sony’s future production plans.
Even though a PC build leaked online, this should not be taken as confirmation of a future PC port. It’s certainly possible — given Sony’s increasing openness to releasing exclusives on PC — but it’s not definitive proof of anything either.

That’s all we know for now. Marvel's Wolverine will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 in late next year.
