The main storyline revolves around the most secretive faction of the Zone — the "Mercenaries". What objectives the Mercenaries pursued, who they were connected to with their last mission, and the consequences of their actions are revealed to the protagonist as he approaches Chernobyl. You will visit the Mercenaries' base, interact with the faction leader, learn how Scar became a mercenary and what he did, but this will require a lengthy journey. The narrative style is in the detective-investigation genre.

The faction wars are not disabled (after all, this is the "trademark" of the CN) — woven into the plot.
