Wreckfest is a dynamic racing action game with a third-person perspective from the creators of the original FlatOut (2004). In the game, you will control a car on a special arena where the main objective is to destroy your opponent, creating spectacular crash situations. There are a large number of cars available in the game, including both European and American models. Additionally, you can smash cars with friends in multiplayer mode.

Genre

Wreckfest is a survival racing simulator that offers exciting gameplay with cars flying apart, many modes, a career, and multiplayer. It continues the ideas of Destruction Derby and FlatOut (2010), but at a modern level.

Compared to beta versions, the final build of Wreckfest pleased players with good graphics and nearly perfect car physics, which is why it received 85% positive reviews on Steam.

Development history

Wreckfest is a long-term project from Bugbear Entertainment, announced in August 2013 under the working title Next Car Game, and released for PC on June 14, 2018.

The developers were unable to raise funds for the game's development on Kickstarter, after which they released an alpha version in Steam's early access. The project created a sensation and gained a large fan base, allowing Bugbear to secure funding for development. At the end of 2016, it was announced that the game would be released for PS4 and Xbox One, with the release occurring on November 20, 2018.

Gameplay

Wreckfest gained fame for its realistic visualization of car destruction during crashes and collisions due to well-developed car models and deep physics calculations.

Each car has several groups of characteristics that determine its condition: body damage, engine condition, transmission, gearbox, and control, as well as overall health. Each parameter affects gameplay.

The game features more than 50 cars of various types: sedans and SUVs, rally and everyday cars, powerful and maneuverable, or balanced. There are no licensed cars, but there are similar replicas that motorsport fans can easily recognize as the originals.

For fun, Wreckfest includes a fire truck, a truck, a cleaning combine, school buses, and city buses. By choosing them, the player changes the victory tactic from racing to ramming, creating chaos on the road and disrupting others' normal driving.

There is no mini-map during the race, so you must assess the track yourself, guessing the trajectory and turns. All knocked-off parts, pieces of cars, and their remains stay on the track. Most races involve 24 cars.

Tuning is present, defining four basic settings — suspension stiffness, gearbox travel, differential position, and brake balance.

Wreckfest uses a realistic physics model, but many cars have a high center of gravity, making them nearly uncontrollable. The car can jump due to a slight bump or "slip" on a puddle of water, after which it can be carried in any direction. There are no nitrous oxides in the game.

Game modes

The game features four main modes and several additional ones:

  • Circuit races — take place on a short circuit, requiring at least 5 laps. The tracks are shaped like an eight, where two streams of cars collide at the intersection, the lagging cars ram the leaders, and the race turns into a frenzy of twisted metal.
  • Rally races — also take place on a circular road, but of much greater length and without intersections. The player needs to complete at least 3 laps with fast and maneuverable sections, featuring tricky turns where an unfortunate player may lose half of their car.
  • Arena — a classic deathmatch where 24 cars smash each other to bits. The winner is the one who destroys the most cars within a certain time or until victory. Teams can compete.
  • Off-road kart racing, where players also collide with each other and run over drivers who have exited their cars, but the game does not end after a fall — the player respawns at the starting point and can take revenge on the offender.

Single and multiplayer game

The campaign offers to win 5 championships, which will take the player from a novice to a world-class pro, and offers 10 different races in each championship. Multiplayer is organized more simply — just choose your desired mode, after which the game will find a lobby and select a map.

Earning money for each victory, the player acquires new cars for their garage, upgrades, and tunes their vehicles. Points are awarded for participating in races and aggressive behavior on the track, which contribute to the accumulation of new levels. The higher the level, the more cars, parts, and other upgrade elements will be unlocked.

In multiplayer, you can set up rules for the race — for fans of fair racing or for those who want to create chaos: drive in the opposite direction to hit the right racers and just swerve back and forth, meeting each player with a head-on collision.

Important features

  • For single-player mode, you can create custom modifications.
  • Customizable realism of physics, which means, for example, that at high difficulty, mechanical damage significantly affects the car's behavior.
  • Well-developed observation and viewing mode during or after the race, allowing you to assess the destruction of each car.
