Geralt of Rivia was the inspiration for the Guardian in an early version of Baldur's Gate 3
Early on in the creation of Baldur's Gate 3, the developers relied on the image of Geralt of Rivia to write the identity of the Guardian. The hero was intended to be extremely ambiguous, but later this idea was abandoned.
In Baldur's Gate 3, the Guardian is a character who protects the main character, whom we create at the very beginning of the game. According to actor Ethan Reid, who voiced the male version of the Guardian, before starting work, the developers from Larian Studios sent him images of Geralt and the spider.
Let us remember that in the early version of the game, the mysterious guest from dreams was not the Emperor at all, but a projection of an illithid larva, which gradually gained the hero's trust. Apparently, the actor was supposed to portray a supposedly reliable character (Geralt) who actually lures the player into a trap (a spider).
In the end, the developers decided to abandon the overly «villainous» role of the Guardian, later revealing him as the Emperor.
