CD Projekt RED Shares New Details on The Witcher 4: Complex Moral Choices and No Neutrality

Following the official announcement of The Witcher 4, a wealth of new story and gameplay details has surfaced online. Here's what we’ve learned from the official website and recent interviews with IGN.

Trailer Highlights:

  • The debut trailer portrays a witcher contract in a remote village plagued by a terrifying monster demanding human sacrifices. Ciri, who takes on the job, attempts to stop the ritual but encounters deeply rooted human superstitions. Through this, she learns an important lesson: sometimes, the real monsters wear human faces;
  • Every frame of the trailer has been crafted with care. For instance, the flower seen at the beginning is inspired by Slavic folklore and was believed to ward off evil spirits;
  • The trailer's terrifying foe, the Bauk, is a swift and powerful creature that senses fear. Based on Serbian mythology, its design also draws inspiration from the Chimera tank in Phantom Liberty;
  • The trailer was created using a custom version of Unreal Engine 5 on a PC equipped with an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. While assets and models are from the game, the final product will likely look different.

Ciri as the Protagonist

  • CD Projekt RED considers Ciri a natural choice for the main role, as the story takes place after Wild Hunt, and Geralt’s tale is complete. The idea of making her the lead has been in the works for nine years;
  • Post-Wild Hunt, Ciri has undergone the famous Trial of the Grasses, cementing her status as a full-fledged witcher;
  • Unlike Geralt, Ciri is younger and more emotional, offering players greater freedom in shaping her character. Her perspective on the witcher code, monster hunting, and neutrality (spoiler: she’s not a fan) will play a significant role;
  • Ciri wields powerful magic and uses a silver chain as a weapon. In the trailer, she draws energy from a cave’s water and channels it into a devastating electrical blast.

Gameplay and Additional Details:

  • Decisions will now have a broader impact, influencing not just the story but also gameplay mechanics. “We want to give players more opportunities to be able to feel that they define their experience,” CDPR stated;
  • Inspired by Cyberpunk 2077, the gameplay will offer more variability, allowing players to choose between stealth, open combat, and different types of weaponry;
  • The game will respect all endings from Wild Hunt, even the one where Ciri dies. “There are hints in that ending that highlight the fact that she probably does not die,” the developers explained;
  • The soundtrack is being composed by P.T. Adamczyk, the senior composer behind Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt RED has yet to announce a release date for The Witcher 4.
