Mafia: The Old Country Developers Share New Plot and Gameplay Details
Tonight at The Game Awards 2024, Hangar 13 studio presented a story trailer for Mafia: The Old Country. A little later, the developers gave an interview for the official Xbox blog, talking about the plot, location, and other aspects of the game.
Contrary to early information, the main character of the prequel will not be Ennio Salieri, but Enzo Favara, an orphan worker who spent his entire childhood working in the dangerous sulfur mines of Sicily. By the will of fate, he got the chance to join the Torrisi crime clan. Having sworn allegiance, the neophyte begins his path to becoming a member of the Sicilian mafia of the 1900s.
As game director Alex Cox said, the action was moved to the island of Sicily in order to better study the origins of the Italian mafia. The era and setting allowed for new gameplay options, such as knife fighting and horse riding, and interesting details like vintage hand-cranked cars. To accurately recreate early 20th century Sicily, the developers not only visited the island in person, but also collaborated with local studio Stormind Games and historians.
Other important details from the interview:
- Fights will be more thoughtful and tactical with a larger selection of weapons, from stilettos to shotguns. However, not all battles will be limited to shootouts;
- Car rides will be a real challenge due to the specifics of the era — you won’t be able to accelerate to high speeds;
- The game’s visuals will be even more impressive thanks to the Unreal Engine 5;
- Story scenes will be highly detailed with many interesting elements;
- The narration, cutscene production, and direction of Mafia: The Old Country will be a cut above previous games;
- You don't need to play other parts of the series to understand the plot;
- Mafia: The Old Country will feature a wide variety of locations, from citrus orchards to large cities.
In addition, along with the interview, Hangar 13 showed new screenshots:
Recall that the game will be released in the summer of 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
