If you don't know: how to find a partner (NPC) for romantic relationships, which mechanics need to be engaged to unlock intimate closeness, and which quests need to be completed to receive a certain gift, then you risk missing out on all the romantic content in one of the best games of the year.
What Romance Systems Are in Dragon's Dogma 2
In Dragon's Dogma 2, there are several romance systems that allow you to «woo» not only story characters but also the most ordinary NPCs. Each system gives the player a special set of bonuses and privileges, thanks to which you can significantly improve your gaming experience. For example, you can receive gifts from your admirer or buy goods with a good discount from a vendor in love with you. If you are interested in an intimate connection and special romance with story characters, Dragon's Dogma 2 can offer this too. You just need to find suitable story characters for relationships. We will tell you more about all the systems below.
The Affinity System
In Dragon's Dogma 2, you can get close to practically any NPC you meet. Each non-playable character has an affinity scale, which the player can increase depending on special conditions. Once the level of affinity reaches a certain mark, NPCs will start blushing in dialogue scenes, come to your house, follow you, and leave gifts at your door. Also, infatuated vendors will give you good discounts on their goods.
Unfortunately, you will not receive any special romantic interactions, dates, or intimate videos with ordinary non-playable characters. The affinity system only provides special privileges that do not affect relationships or the appearance of new companions.
Romantic Relationship System
True romantic relationships with confessions of love and a special cut-scene can only be developed with two key characters: Ulrika and Wilhelmina. You will have to complete numerous quests to get close to them and eventually unlock love lines.
Ulrika will be one of the first characters you meet in the game. Some time after meeting her, you must find her in the open world to start her personal quest chain, which will ultimately lead to romantic relationships.
You will meet Wilhelmina during the «Stolen Throne» mission. She becomes your ally after she is appointed head of the brothel in «Wenworth.» After that, you can develop a relationship with her by completing special tasks.
The Admirer System that Affects the Game's Ending
Both of the aforementioned romantic systems are part of the global «admirer system,» which affects the narrative. The NPC with the highest affinity for the main character, as well as a high level of involvement in the relationship, will play a special role at the end of the main story. Click on the spoiler if you want to know how it works.
During the final quest «Legacy,» the dragon will need a lover for the main character. If you had a romance with Ulrika or Wilhelmina, it's likely that one of the two girls will be chosen. If not, the dragon will take the NPC to whom you gave the most gifts. If throughout the game you did not show attention to any NPCs, the fire-breathing lizard will independently choose a partner for you from all available quest givers.
How to Win Over a Non-Playable Character
Suppose you meet a non-playable character with whom you wish to establish a relationship. Here's what you should do:
- Talk to the NPC at least once to unlock dialogue options;
- Open the menu and scroll to the «History» tab;
- Click on «Character List» and find the NPC with whom you want to establish a connection.
- In the character description under the «gender, race, residence» tab, you will find preferences;
- Remember what items the character likes. For example, Danny likes interesting and fashionable items;
- Close the menu;
- Start a conversation with the NPC and press the «gift» button. On PS5 — it's «Square», on the XBOX controller — it's «X» and «Y» on the keyboard;
- Select the appropriate gift.
Always choose a gift that matches their preferences! If you give a non-playable character something they dislike (e.g., rotten fruits or dried flowers), the closeness scale will significantly decrease.
What Gifts to Give for Maximum Closeness in Dragon's Dogma 2
It's not possible to specify the exact number of gifts required to achieve maximum closeness between the main character and a non-playable character. Much depends on the specific NPC, the quality of the gifts, and personal preferences. Often, four to six gifts should suffice. The main thing to remember is that the «affinity system» has a daily limit. This means you can only give one gift per day.
Unfortunately, in Dragon's Dogma 2, there is no visual scale of romantic relationships. You won't be able to understand how much progress you have made in your relationships with any character. You just have to be patient and continue giving gifts. We recommend giving different items to the characters. Giving the same gift over and over will hinder the development of the relationship. If you don't have a suitable gift, try giving a «Bouquet of Flowers.» You can find it in the open world or buy it from a merchant for 1000 gold coins.
At some point, your beloved will start blushing. This means you have reached the maximum level in the «affinity system.»
