Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us series shares her diagnosis

Actress Bella Ramsey recently revealed in an interview with Vogue that she was diagnosed with autism. This happened during the filming of the first season of the series The Last of Us, where she plays the role of Ellie.

She mentioned that this diagnosis was a liberating and relieving experience for her. Ramsey explained that she had previously spoken about her neurodiversity but avoided specifying the diagnosis for some reason. The impetus for getting evaluated came from a remark by a crew member who has a daughter with autism. She noticed signs of autism in Ramsey and suggested she undergo a diagnosis.

The actress noted that she had always felt "weird" and "lonely" and had considered the possibility of autism. She also spoke about the sensory challenges typical for people with autism spectrum disorder, such as painful hypersensitivity to micro-expressions and body language of those around her.

I've spoken a bit about neurodivergence before, but I always for some reason didn’t want to say what it was. I got diagnosed with autism when I was filming season one of The Last of Us. This is freeing... it enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do.

As a reminder, Bella Ramsey is also known for her role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. The premiere of the second season of The Last of Us featuring her is set for April.
