Viggo Mortensen in Talks to Return as Aragorn in New Lord of the Rings

The creators of the new Lord of the Rings project are aiming to bring back actors from the original trilogy. According to Philippa Boyens, who worked on all previous adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, the team has already approached Viggo Mortensen to reprise his role as Aragorn.

Mortensen's involvement is pivotal, as his character ties directly into the film's plot. The story is set to unfold alongside the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, occurring after Bilbo’s birthday and before the journey through Moria. The movie will explore Aragorn's hunt for Gollum.

Boyens confirmed she has spoken with Mortensen, as well as Peter Jackson and director Andy Serkis, about the project. A final decision will be made in the coming months after Mortensen reviews the script.

The screenwriter added that if Mortensen reprises the role, his appearance would likely be de-aged using "digital makeup" without relying on AI. Boyens expressed hope that even if Mortensen turns down the role, he might contribute to the film in some other capacity.

Previously, Mortensen stated he would be delighted to return as Aragorn, provided the story was compelling. Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom, who played Gandalf and Legolas, have also expressed interest in reprising their roles.
