The Witcher 4 Developers Anticipated Mixed Reactions to Ciri as the Protagonist

The announcement of The Witcher 4 sparked heated debates, primarily over the choice of Ciri as the main character. According to the game’s narrative director, Philipp Weber, the developers expected such a reaction, as many fans are deeply attached to Geralt.

Weber revealed that CD Projekt RED had been considering Ciri for a long time, believing that retiring Geralt would bring a fresh perspective to the series through new gameplay mechanics. Moreover, the team felt they had already given Geralt a fitting farewell in the Blood and Wine expansion, and revisiting his story might undermine that conclusion.

I really loved playing as Geralt, so I think we’re aware that if some people think right now that they would still prefer to be Geralt, I do think that’s a legitimate concern, so if this is where that concern is coming from, that’s valid.

The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago.

Weber also mentioned that Ciri is at the beginning of a new journey, allowing the team to tell fresh stories—such as exploring what it truly means to be a Witcher.

The Witcher 4 is expected to launch by the end of 2027. While the list of platforms remains unconfirmed, there are rumors that the game might not be released on Xbox Series S.
