How to Set Gender and Orientation in The Sims 4
A recent update for The Sims 4 has introduced the ability to customize the gender and sexual orientation of your Sims. You can learn how to do this from our guide.
How to Set a Sim's Sexual Orientation
Open the Sim's settings menu and click on the icon with three green circles in the upper left corner of the screen.
Here you will see two tabs: Gender and Sexual Orientation. We are interested in the second option.
You can track three parameters:
- Who the Sim is romantically interested in (Men, Women). You have the right to define who your ward will be ready to enter into relationships with, accept courtship from, and go on dates with. Note that this does not concern sex (WooHoo), which is configured in the third point.
- Whether this Sim engages in romantic explorations (Yes, No). This parameter determines the character's behavior in adolescence. If you choose Yes, then the Sim will be open to relationships with other people. If No, then they will decline anyone who invites them on a date or offers intimacy.
- Who this Sim will fool around and have WooHoo with (Men, Women). This setting establishes who your character will fool around with (for adolescents) and have sex with (for adults and elders). Keep in mind that this parameter does not affect romantic relationships with a steady partner, but applies to special friends.
As you've probably realized, romantic and sexual relationships are now configured separately. In all cases, you can choose one, both options, or none. In the second case, you get a bisexual who is open to relationships with both men and women. If you do not choose any option, you get an asexual Sim, not ready for relationships with anyone.
Keep in mind that if you do not set these settings yourself, your Sims will be bisexual and open to romantic experiments. However, a Sim's preferences may change over time. For example, if a character had a successful experience with girls, they might prefer them.
How to Set a Sim's Gender
In the Sim's settings, you can specify their gender features. These are located next to the sexual orientation parameters we discussed earlier.
The following options are available to you:
- Body Structure (masculine, feminine). The female option has a slimmer waist and breasts. As a result, they cannot wear clothes with an open top regardless of preferences. Men have broader shoulders and more developed musculature.
- Clothing Preferences (masculine, feminine). This parameter only affects the hairstyles and outfits that are offered by default. You have the right to dress your Sim however you want.
- This Sim can: get pregnant, impregnate others, neither (infertility). The description speaks for itself. Note that if you want to have children, one Sim needs to be able to get pregnant, and the other needs to be able to impregnate others.
- Can this Sim pee standing up (yes, no)? This parameter affects how they will use the toilet.
As for newborn Sims, you won't be able to choose their gender and sexual preferences until they become teenagers. But after reaching a certain age, you have the right to configure them just as you do adult characters.
How to Set Pronouns Related to Your Sim
A new option, Change Pronoun, has appeared in the character settings menu. You can determine how your Sim will be addressed: He/His, She/Her, or They/Them. Besides, there is a fourth option that offers the possibility to set your own set of pronouns for different situations. Currently, the system is quite raw, so various glitches and errors may occur.
