Valve plans to make the game certification process for the upcoming Steam Machine mini-PC simpler and more flexible than the existing verification program for the Steam Deck. This was explained by Valve designer Lawrence Yang in an interview with Game Developer.

The core principle outlined by Yang is that games already bearing the Steam Deck Verified status will very likely pass the Steam Machine check automatically, owing to the similar architecture of both devices—they are built on the x86 platform and use AMD hardware. Meanwhile, the higher performance of the Steam Machine will allow these games to run with enhanced graphical settings.

The key differences in verification criteria will involve requirements specific to the handheld's features. For instance, the mandate for games to run correctly at 1280x800 or 1280x720 pixel resolutions—critical for the Steam Deck's display—may be relaxed or removed entirely. Since the Steam Machine is designed for use with monitors and TVs, this parameter becomes less of a priority. The main conditions for earning the Steam Machine Verified status will remain stable operation via the Proton compatibility layer on SteamOS and full controller support.

In the same interview, Valve engineer Steve Cardinali explained the reasoning behind creating the Steam Controller Puck accessory. This wireless transmitter is designed to address common Bluetooth connection issues like interference, latency, and difficulties connecting multiple devices simultaneously. The Puck provides a more stable signal and also serves as a docking station for charging the controller.

Valve announced its new lineup of devices in November 2025, but specific launch dates and final pricing for the Steam Machine have not yet been revealed. Against a backdrop of rising component costs, particularly for memory and SSDs, the system is expected to go on sale sometime in 2026.
